FWCC meeting 4/7/07
Some Jackc99 notes from Saturday's meeting:
Atterbury range is almost done. They are trying to grow grass before the opening. Probably delay a couple of weeks from the proposed 5/11/07 opening date. Final cost is $4.7 mill
Discussion started on various "packages" of licenses DNR is proposing:
Combo plus spring turkey plus habitat stamp plus deer firearms for $73.
Combo plus spring and fall turkey plus habitat stamp plus waterfowl stamp plus trout stamp plus firearms deer plus muzzy deer plus bonus deer for $155
Combo plus spring and fall turkey plus habitat stamp plus waterfowl stamp plus trout stamp plus archery deer, firearms deer and bonus deer for $155
Archery deer, firearms deer, muzzy deer, bonus deer for $86
Three year Anglers - fishing license good for 3 years plus trout stamps
I think only the first one has any chance at this time.
FWCC membership - talking about expanding the FWCC to include more conservation groups.
Talked about issues of hunter recruitment and how Hunters Ed can be an obstacle to getting new hunters. Apprentice license may be down the road. Watching Ohio for now.
Archery in Schools is really taking off. 20 schools participated in state tournament and others are inquiring. Cost is $1500 to get a school started. FWCC is going to sponsor an unknown school by the next meeting.
Minnehaha looks dead for this legislative session. 12,000 acres if we can wrangle money from somewhere to buy it.
DNR wants all wildlife habitat projects to be listed in a statewide database so we can see who's doing what and where. Goal is to be able to share resources such as seed drills, seed and manpower on shared projects.
DNR Law Enforcement is now only 2 men short of full complement with the new class being placed in the field. Another class is possible in a year or 2 as retirements come along.
Most important: Big Oaks is under lawsuit from treehuggers. Every sportsman in Indiana needs to make comments to Dr. Joe Robb ASAP in support of hunting and fishing on the facility.
Indiana budget is a mess. The House voted to keep $6mil for Heritage Trust but nothing for Clean Water Indiana. The Senate voted to keep $6mil for Heritage trust and $1 mil for CWI. Both groups deleted money for Minnehaha from the budget. Need everybody sending info to all legislators to support CWI and Heritage Trust.
Speaker of the House Bauer killed the constitional amendment creating the right to hunt and fish. we now have to start all over. Bauer needs to go.
Bill to cause CO's to collect fees in the field was killed in Senate sub-committee. Goes to summer study where we hope it will die.
