An interesting thing happened last night.... A female producer at the station approached me, knowing I was a hunter she asked for my help.
For those outside the Indianapolis area, Saturday night there were 2 people killed as they were fleeing an SUV that had possible gang members inside. The SUV had someone inside firing an AK-47 at two vehicles that had just left a birthday party at a community center. The 2 persons who died were actually killed by the head-on impact their car sustained as it hit a tree at high speed. Another car who was also being chased had two people inside who were hit in the head, but miraculously survived. Anyway, 2 dead......and 6 others hit by bullets. It wasn't a scene in a "bad part of town" but actually in a very nice part of the outskirts of Indy.
Anyway, this producer who approached me happened to have this scenario end in the immediate vicinity of her home. She is not married and lives alone.....she told me she has never been so afraid in her life and she decided right then and there that she wants to get a handgun for home protection. She wanted to know what she should get......
I first congratulated her on coming to the realization of the need for a firearm as protection, but I told her that never would I advocate her rushing out and getting a gun without any training since she has limited experience around any kind of guns. (she said she had some brothers that hunted as kids, but that it).
So.... my question to you guys would be..... what would you recommend for an average build woman to use, something with enough stopping power, but comfortable enough that she wont be afraid of the muzzle jump. Also, is anyone aware of any firearm classes and ranges in the Indy area? (Something other than Don's Guns!) I'm sure she would be most comfy in a class geared towards females, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
UPDATE: I found courses at Pop Guns in Indy, as well as an NRA certified course.
