Got home today and long story short my wife, daughter and another friend pulled this pony out of a swamp..(people had 3 other horses, 30,000 dollar horse trailer)and SEVERLY NEGLECTED this animal. I took a saws-all and trimmied worst part of hoof off so she was more comfortable. Farrier coming Mon. Vet coming tomorrow at 8 am. ...I swear.... : Solohunter

WOW!!
I've never seen anyhthing like that.
I know that the animals condition is foremost to take care of now, but what then?
These people need at least that pony taken away from them.
You did good.
Keep us informed on what is happening.

Its a shame how some people treat their animals. Your family did a good thing helping this horse. The sad thing is the owners will probably deny any wrong doing. h.h.

We have taken possesion, she is now ours. We have documented everything. There are no animal cruelty laws in IN that cover this in IN. She had a little cover and water and hay next to her. My wife has researched this many times. Sad. Vet will be out this am wormers and vaccinations will be done as well as X-rays on her feet. Solohunter

Vet just left…15 years old, Halflinger/Shetland mix. Heart, lungs, temp good. Took x-rays for farrier. He was optimistic. May live another 20 yrs with the proper care, sweet lil pony. |Gave her a wormer, vaccines next week. She seems comfortable and content. Solo

I had no idea that the hoovs growed that way.
How often do you need to trim them and has that horse ever had them trimmed?

regular trimming , every5-6 weeks, depending on use and their daily routine. These are VERY bad.Not this pic. One of our ponies trimmed, maintained hooves. We just switched farriers because there were problems with the last one. Solo

Appears to have been foundered at one time. Lots of things may cause this. Vets often suggest turn out or put down. Do you know the entire story?

Camby - if the horse is kept in a small stall with soft floor, there is no wear to keep the hooves down as would be the case in an open pasture... without periodic trimming, the pics above are the result... and that took probably a couple of years to get that bad... worst I've ever seen...

I was at my cousin's place once to look over some woods to hunt , while we were there we spotted one of his neighbor's ponies that was in similar condition to what Solo's wife found , hooves overgrown and badly neglected . He went to the door and flat told her that she no longer owned that pony and made arrangements to have it removed to where it would get proper treatment . I'll never understand why people neglect their pets that way .

Vet seemed optimistic, we finally found a journeyman farrier who will probably be able to slowly bring her feet back to a manageable hoof. Yes, probably foundered at one time. Solohunter

Farriers are getting fewer and farther between down here. There are only two guys that I know of. Glad you guys jumped on that pony. That is probably the worst case I've ever seen.

Too bad. How could you let a pet get like that? Any critter, for that matter?
Idiots like this get reactionary animal cruelty laws passed, which are then turned against sportsmen. If we could eliminate idiots from the world, there would hardly be any need for any kind of laws!

Well the farrier trimmied them up nicely, she is walking pretty good in her stall and we put another pony next to her , they are exchanging, whinnys(sp)? Xrays did show that she had foundered and that may be when they started the neglect. For now she will not be euthanized. Solohunter

That is great solohunter.
I'm glad that you and your wife are compassionate people that have gone way out of your way to help and animal that could not help itself. Most people would not have gotten involved.
Thank you for your kindness.....
