I have a wood burning stove in my work shop that I use for primary heat. I go through about 1-1/2 cords a year. I am thinking about an outside wood burning furnace for my house. I cut several cords of wood each year. I think I may start selling firewood. It's hard work and not much money, but it will keep you in shape.

I have an almost worthless insert in my fireplace. Only use it on cold, damp days.

I have an almost worthless insert in my fireplace. Only use it on cold, damp days. I've got a 30 year old CEMI fireplace insert that will flat run you out of the house with heat. On a 20 degree day I can burn it and the furnace never kicks on. This is in a one story 1500 square feet house.

I've been thinking of buying one. What kind of price increase should I expect on my insurance?

I really like wood stoves, however I don't want to have to "depend" on it. I have wood furnace w/ blower in the house and it runs pretty steady when temps get 25F or lower. Not burning it presently as it's ony 45 of so and it gets too hot in the house. They are really nice if you get a week or two stretch of real cold weather. Keeps the house nice and toasty, and saves a bunch of gas useage. I also like the fact that I still can have heat if the power goes out.
I've got all the free wood I'll ever need right out the back door,so that is a plus for me. Also, I kind of enjoy cutting wood. Good exercise and something to keep you busy when there isn'y much else going on.
My insurance man say's no increase, so long as it is a professional installation.

Just came in from cutting more firewood. First time I have ever pinched 2 saws at the same time, took me a while to free them up. Had to use a come along and some rope. Moved a deer stand while I was out there...saw some deer.... Solohunter

I've been thinking of buying one. What kind of price increase should I expect on my insurance? As long as it is an approved piece and is installed according to code, it should not effect your insurance rates at all.

One more question, I have a 1300 s/f ranch. Will a small wood burner do the job, or would you recommend one with a heat exchanger?

We put in a Corn Burner and it is going to pay for itself this winter already. We have a 2200 Sq ft Cape cod and it heats everthing but our bedroom, which we keep a small electic oil heater in. Going thru a bushel of corn a day at less than $2 a bushel or about $60 a month. We had our LP tank minimum filled which gave us 40% in November and we are still at 20% as of today. Normally, we fill up our LP tank 3 times during the winter averaging $1,500 to $ 2,000. Right now we are on course to spend about $ 500 total for this winter, including the 200 gallons of LP we paid for.
Corn Burner from Rural King bought in November cost us about $ 1,500.

I still carry a couple of wedges & a 3lb. hammer from my timber cutting days to the woods when I cut firewood. These 3 items will free a pinched saw bar from even the heaviest loaded tree trunk or limb.

I own a heating/cooling company and at a home show this past weekend every person who came into my booth wanted to talk aboutr Geothermal heat and wood burning fireplaces ! I did not talk to one single person about gas furnaces !
I have heard many different times that the life span of heating with wood is 5 years. Not because the furnace wears out, but because the guy cutting the wood does ! lol

Our fireplace insert & ceiling fans will run you out of the house. It's a great supplemental heat source for our heat-pump system. Besides, mommy loves the wood heat. Gotta keep her happy.

My friend is an engineer for water furnace here in fort wayne. If I ever build a house I plan to buy a unit. Cheap energy and good for the environment. They have verticle units you can put in a small yard now.
