Here, in Indiana, I hunt Squirrels a few time in a wooded area, about 60 miles north of where I live. The owner always knows when I come, but I always carry a cell phone with me incase I need it in an emergency situation. The other place I hunt is on my property of 15 acres. In that case I don't carry the phone. In Ky, where I Deer Hunt; everybody knows where everyone is hunting and we all agree to meet back at the trucks at a certain time. Sometime we use "walkie-Talkies", but a few have cell phones.

I always carry mine in case of an emergency, but have never had to use it in an emergency. The only time I used mine was to get help dragging a deer out.

I said never because until just recently we could not get reception in our area. I have used Walkie-Talkies for the last couple of years just in case of an emergency.

I always carry my cell phone for emergencies. I could be wrong about this, but wasn't it at one time illegal to carry communication devices while you were hunting? I assume that that has changed but I do remember not being able to carry anything that would allow you to communicate with another hunter while hunting. Does anyone remember this?

Hoyt, depends on where you are. Some states have laws against any radios (and I would assume cell phones) being in your possession in the field. Most have laws more like ours that say the devices can be on your person, and even used in the field, but can NOT be used to relay the location or movement of game, or to help in herding game. This seems like the most reasonable approach to me, even though it probably is pretty much impossible to enforce.
I have a good friend who fell partly from his climbing stand a couple years ago as he was just reaching the desired height. His feet caught in the straps, and his upper body fell down past the platform and he hung there in pain. He's a pretty athletic man, and slender of build, but found he still was unable to pull himself up onto the platform again from that position. Fortunately, his cell phone was in an inside pocket and didn't fall out. He was able to summon help, and may well be with us today because of the phone. He was cripping around for about a year with the ligament damage in his feet from the strained position he was in while hanging up there for 45 minutes or so, but he's pretty much completely recovered now.
Haven't had any such serious need myself, but I did get caught in a jim-dandy North Dakota thunderstorm one late afternoon, the year before my partner and I started carrying our walkie-talkies. Didn't make it back to the road until after ten at night. Could have been serious, because the muddy hills out there are slick as grease and I'd have been very difficult to find if I'd have broken a leg or something after one of the many slides I took into gullies that evening.
Most places where I hunt, I've had much better luck with walkie-talkies than with cell phones.
I think it's a real good idea to have some sort of communication device on my person when hunting. I try to stay within the rules, sometimes going to great lengths to remain legal. However, if radios/cells were ruled illegal here in the field, I think I'd take a chance on being caught with one, rather than take the chance on needing one and being caught without it.

I carry mine all the time not just for emergencies. When it come to my cell phone i am like a teenage girl most of the time my cell phone battery is dead by the end of the day because i talk on it all day. And i get very bored hunting sometimes so i just have to call somebody.

Nothing better than calling your buddies who are at work while you are on a stand somewhere and simply laughing at them! Behind emergency use, that is the best use of a cell phone....next would be calling the wife and explaining how you will be home late (again) cause you had deer all around you and had to wait for pitch-black to come down.....

If I'm hunting someplace other than my own back yard I carry one . Having even a cheap $20 Trac Phone with you could mean the difference between life and death when you hunt alone , which I frequently do , and you just can't gamble your safety on a GMRS radio . It's comforting to know that I have it with me if needed , and I would recommend it to anyone .

I have to take my cell everywhere I go (job)....but I ALWAYS leave it in the truck when I'm deer hunting. Most of the spots I hunt don't have good signal anyway, always have to drive a few miles to get signal, so carrying it in the woods would be useless.

I had my new one in my pocket this fall during ML season, and one afternoon was sneaking and peeking along and saw a nice doe coming up the draw in my direction. Unknown to me, the buttons on the outside of the flip phone for the ring tone loudness and also for speaker phonehad been accidentally bumped (why the heck did Motorola put THOSE buttons outside anyway?). Sure enough, got a call from my brother in AZ at that point. Scrambled to get the phone out of my pocket to quiet the ringing, and as soon as I opened the lid so the ringing would shut up, here's his booming voice on speaker phone asking me how I'm doing! By this time the doe is well within range, and I'm trying to shut him up and get off the phone and get my hand back on the ML, and havinga mild nervous breakdown all at once. The doe escaped, and I called him back to explain and we both had a good laugh. But now I remember to just turn the fool thing off while I'm actively hunting. Still reassuring to have in case I need to call out.

When I'm out I generally either carry a cell phone or a 2m ham radio (KB9LZD). The property I hunt on generally, cell phones do not work, but my radio hits several local towers and I can get them to autopatch out if needed.

Always have one with me, and after I blown my knee out the first day of duck season, I'm glad I had it, called my wife and she had me pre-reg. at the E.R. And was there waiting on me when the guy's got me off the lake. They could save your life sometime, If you have one take it.
