I would suggest both. As neat as the digitals are, I still prefer a SLR 35mm for the most control and highest quality photos.
I read in a travel guide once that you need to take precautions with your film because x-ray machines can damage it. If I find it I will pass along the suggestions it gives.

Stick with the digital. Get a high quality camera and there is no differnce. Plus no need to run out of film, take a bad pic it is instantly deleted. Memory cards are a lot more compact then film canisters.
My sister and a cousin have digital cameras that have instant pictures, you don't have to wait for the light to come on or to hear the beep. The one is definately professional model and I would guess over a grand but my sisters is more of an upper end amature model and I believe she paid around $500 for it, but it has high pixels a good zoom and you can take some amazing action shots.

you can shoot your pen raised deer, holding corn chips in one hand to get him good and close and pistol in the other, JUST DON'T CALL IT HUNTING!! IT'S NOT!! That reminds me of the very first Brown County State Park Hunt. A buddy and myself were enjoying lunch on a picnic table at about 10:00am, It almost seemed as soon as we opened the chip bag they came running in...lol We promptly layed the hammer on a 45 pounder and a 60 pounder!

Thanks for the camera advice guys. Probably taking my old Canon SLR and a newer digital like the 10X Woody suggested. Could still use advice on film transport.

Have your camera bag hand inspected at the airport , be sure to tell them that there is film in the bag so you don't want it x-rayed . Airport security folks are used to this , they've always treated mine carefully . Keeping the film safe from extremes of temperature is very important , take the camera bag on with you as carry on luggage since the baggage compartment isn't kind to film .
