Should you turn off your computer at night? I now have the answer as to what happens to our computer while it is unattended during the night... Click here: www.justracin.net/is.swf

Always wondered what those icons did at night. On a serious note, pc's are meant to run, much easier on the parts if they are not turned off and on all the time. Gone for several days and won't be using it, turn it off, use it daily, let it run. It will last longer. You can set it up so the hard drive goes to "sleep" after so many hours. Just make sure you have good surge protector when you leave it on all the time.

What is the definition of a "good surge protector"? Make/model? ?

The higher the protection rating, the better. Many good models on the market. To have the best surge protection you need 2 layers of protection. One outside at your electric meter base entrance & others inside at your individual recteptical plug-in's.

TrippLite Isobar is a good one. APC and Belkin seem to make good ones. Most of them will do the job, just don't use the $2.99 surge protector from wallyworld and expect that to do the job. I bought a surge protector/battery backup unit from one of the office supply stores. Makes it nice when power goes out, battery powers the pc for about a half hour so I can shut it down myself.

I leave mine on at night too. Only if I will not be around, or not going to use it for a few days will I turn it off.
