They also host a very good and active hunting message board, as I know you are aware Woody, I have seen you on there!
I go by the handle "Bigsouthforkboy" on there. Since our property down there is very close to the Big South Fork National Park.

I think I rode that train there once.. www.bsfsry.com/My church goes on mission trip to Red Bird Mission every year. I've been down there for the last 5 years building wheelchair ramps , room additions , painting etc, etc, etc. A TRUE blessing to help those folks.. That's ELK country too isn't it?

Woody, That train leaves from Stearns, KY. That is my father-in-law's birthplace. When we bought our property (about 10 miles from there) we tore down the old house his grandfather built and used that lumber to build our cabin. That old house stood in Stearns right near where you got on that train.
Yes, McCreary County is in the Elk restorartion zone. There aren't a lot of elk that were released in Kentucky there yet, but there are some that were released on the Tennessee side of the Big South Fork National Park that are coming up into McCreary. The hope is that as Kentucky's herd spreads out further, they will interbreed with the Tennessee herd to help the genetic diversity.
Red Bird Mission is in the heart of the Kentucky elk zone. If I am not mistaken, the state record bull was taken out of there last year (way over 300 inches). We are going there to ride 4 wheelers on their trail in the near future.

Small world, eh?
That is fabulous and rough country down there.
You just cant see very far. All the roads seem to follow the creeks that wind their way through the mountains/hills.
A lot of those folks have had a rough life and it is a true blessing to help them out..

There are a lot of terrific people there. There are also a lot of people who have gotten passed by and are in a very bad way. Unfortunately many of them have turned to dealing drugs to get by. There is a huge push on to build up the tourism industry down in McCreary County. I hope that gets going and gets some of the less fortunate back on the road they deserve to be on. They have been blessed with some terrific natural resources, they might as well reap some financial benefit from it.
I know one thing, I love it down there and my wife and I will be living there in our golden years (if not before).
I appreciate you and your church's efforts to help as well.
