In reference to ahawkeyes question posed to greendeem on Feb. 21 regarding quartering a deer to transport out of rough country, surely it would be prudent to make this legal. Although the purpose of this law is readily apparant & easily understandable, anyone who has attempted to drag a 200 lb. bruiser out of a 100 ft. bottom alone can appreciate the need for the legality of quartering. As lifelong hunters of the HNF, my buddies & I go deep. We use a cart on the logging trail, & help each other with the steep uphill drags, which works out fine. However, due to family obligations, etc. on occasions, it's necessary to hunt alone. A cart is useless on a steep slope, & a 1 mile solo drag is a pure killer! Quartering is a common practice on big game, so surely there must be a simple way to make this possibility legal in IN. Any thoughts, ideas?

I agree , and with telecheck coming up on the horizon there's no reason not to legalize quartering .

After dragging two deer out by myself this year i will have a cart next year.
I am not against the quartering idea but personally i think it would be easier to use the cart other then make several trips.
If you are a mile deep and it takes three trips to get your deer out thats 5 miles.
I have avoided areas to hunt because i knew i couldnt get a deer out by myself so with quartering it would open up more options.

I can fully understand the reasoning in this law, but is this another case of trying to stop a relatively few bad guys by making it tougher on the law abiding?
I would think that a good compromise would be to allow quartering as long as the head was one of those "quarters" packed out.
OR ..
If it is proof of sex needed (I'm sure that is the reason) then maybe leaving the genitals intact on one of the quarters would be the way to go.
Greendeem,
if we all agree on this, how do we go about making these suggestions?

I agree, in some cases it would be nice. I can't imagine pulling a deer out of some of those ravines of the big woods around the state. I am pretty certain most gov't owned properties an ATV is not allowed, in theory anyways!
I'd carry a comealong in my pack if I were hunting some of those areas. Might take all day but surely easier then tring to pull a decent sized deer by hand up those or around those hills.

Can't get an ATV to where I went last year. Quartering would have been a big help. Count me in as a supporter.

ATV anyone? No thanks, There's enough of those infernal contraptions running around the woods screwing up everyones hunting not to mention "SOLITUDE" I'm all for quartering( actually halving would work for most deer)

I don't know how we survived before ATV's.... dragging a deer 2 mile out of these hills sucks. If I couldn't use my ATV to collect them, I wouldn't donate 1/4th as many deer to the Hunters for the Hungry program. If it were legal to quarter one, I'd still never kill one in an area that required it... I just don't get enough out of KILLING a deer to work that friggin' hard.

I used to deer hunt the Hoosier National, and parked by the firetower. No carts allowed on the road that goes back, and I killed a buck several years ago back begind the cemetary-a couple of miles as the crow flies from the firetower.
Had to drag him out. Sometimes that`s all there is, sweat and sore muscles. Took me 3 + hours to get him back to the parking spot.

I agree 100% trapperdave. Solitude is why I love to hunt the big woods. Besides, motorized vehicles are illegal in the area I hunt.

Wow I'm really glad someone noticed that! I had another post on here in the fall about 4 wheelers and how I didn't like them Woody thought it would be better to move it to the ATV section but deer hunters were my target readers, I feel fortunate to have a place like HNF where I can go without the ATV's running in and out of the woods qtr.ing or no qtr.ing I will hunt deeper and deeper to get away from pressure and to find bigger animals. I feel that too many of us just want to make hunting easy. It just makes sence to me to make it as fair to an animal as you can in that respect and I feel it is a disrespect to an animal to haul it out with an ATV I know I'll probably hear it from 4-wheeler nation on this but I'm the type of guy that looks at Tred Barta, smiles and say's the old way isn't dead yet!

Hauling a deer versus dragging a deer doesn't change a thing about how hard it is to hunt.

Hawk when you pass 60 and usually hunt alone you may think that quads are a help in pulling your game out. I know that I changed my mind last year when I was useing the mule and a branch, thorn or something flattened one tire and a 1/2 mile thru mud got to be one heck of a long pull. Now the happy owner of a small quad.

All I'm saying is, is that I like the old way a bow a few arrows me and the deer I'm on his turf. If you're on your own land and you want to, go ahead I just don't like the quads and feel that when some one wizzes past me on one on public ground that I'm being cheated. cheated out of an expierance of hunting one on one with an animal, I put in the work, the hike and the haul out and some one ilegaly (on public ground) is using a quad to get where I am or where I have been,it really T's me off. but like I said your land your call, public land CO's call. You hunt your way I'll hunt mine, let's just make sure we're all hunting by the rules.

Anyone care to guess how much the total harvest will go up the first year that a tele-check becomes available?
We all know there are deer taken, tagged, but not checked in every year. Not trying to justify the practice, but it can be a hassle to re-load the deer to take it to a check station after you get it home... Especially when you live 15-20 miles from a check station.
So who at the DNR do we need to contact about tele-check and quartering?
