I heard a commercial on the radio yesterday from the HSUS. The gist of the ad was they have a special program set up that they are trying to get landowners to enroll in that "protects" their land. The ad in no uncertain terms said they will manage their land as far as providing suitable habitat, planting etc, and a "bonus" is the land gets protected from real estate developers, hunting, and fishing. They had a website for it but I can't remember what it was called. This is pretty disturbing, especially if they start convincing landowners to get involved in this for the sake of "wildlife". They could lock up thousands of acres of land that sounds like is put into a trust and then becomes inaccessible to any type of hunting/fishing. No doubt their only goal is to keep people from hunting and fishing, and this is not about providing habitat for wildlife. If I find the website i'll post it.

Land trusts are becoming an important part of preserving property from developers. HOWEVER, it is very important to make sure that the property you preserve is preserved the way you want it. Make sure that the land trust you deal with allows the sports we love to continue. If they don't, find another land trust.
Farmland protection will again be an issue in the next general assembly. Please support efforts to save our small farms.

Indyhunter, CILTI, a land trust, managed to use some of "OUR" Guide White River Fish Kill settlement money to do just what you're talking about on the northside of Indy. These opportunists are cashing in by protecting land adjacent to their own from development and sportsmen, us. I'm sure the administrators of the funds are buds with these rich tree hugging birders. I called them, and the rules are no hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, etc. Birding is pretty much all you can do there: www.cilti.org/bob.htmlOther funds from this settlement were similarly squandered, but don't get me started! Don't care for the HSUS agenda, but I'm not opposed to that concept at all. Thank God there are a few places on this earth where we can leave only foot prints and take only pictures.
Besides ....... that makes the adjacent land an excellent hunting spot ! ;D ;D
The wife and I have talked about leaving our farm to The Nature Conservancy so that it never gets developed. Many of their properties allow some hunting and fishing.

Steiny - what you say about the Nature Conservancy is true in that they do allow hunting on some properties. Be very specific if you enter into an agreement with them and it can stay that way forever.
