That tree is estimated to be over 250 years old and is located in the downtown area of TRAVERSE CITY,MICHIGAN. The tree is called an INDIAN MARKER TREE which was bent that way by the Indians to serve as a tree marking a trail from the Detroit area leading to the Mackinaw Straights. The tree was pointing to what is now the location of the City courthouse after the early city founders moved Indian burial mounds in order to make room for the courthouse. The city of TRAVERSE is said to have destroyed several burial mounds leading to PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES that continue to this date. There is a historical marker at the base of the tree and stories of INDIAN MARKER TREES can be found on the internet. This particular tree is noted in the history of these trees. My wife and I were admiring the amazing HALLOWEEN decorations that folks put out every year when I noticed this tree and the owner of the home came out and we had a nice conversation about MARKER TREES. Last year the wife and I did a night time PARANORMAL walk with a historian through the areas where the INDIAN MOUNDS were destroyed and she explained some of the unusual things that have happened over the years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_trees

It's on Washington street across from the homes that have the giant SPIDERS and huge skeletons decorations for Halloween.

If cut into those things would be known as burls - but wouldn't suggest doing that since it's a marker tree which would place plenty of historical significance on the tree alone. See the straight lines where the trunks meet the burl? Looks like someone cut there at some point indicating that maybe someone cut some original trunks off at some point in it's past.
