Taking a little break and heading for the hills. Doing some visiting, maybe a flea market, sight seeing, gun shops, and maybe even a visit to Hillbilly Hotdogs in Lesage, WV. Visiting wifes kin folk in Eastern KY and WV. Always a great trip. Just far enough to disconnect for awhile and enjoy the old way of living. Beautiful scenery in Appalachia.

It looks like perfect weather. I know they started stocking trout in the streams in some of the states on the East Coast already.

Made it to our destination. Got to hike on a shelf of a deep holler. Went with wifes uncle, the deaf mute. We swapped camera cards and checked for sign. It's funny, actually embarrassing for us. We are trying to be quiet in the dry leaves, while the deaf guy keeps looking back at us like we are bulls in a China shop. All the while he is stealthy as a cougar. Lol.
Saw about 25 road kill bucks on the way down. Total blood bath. Couple decent size.

We watched it work to within 10yds of us before it sensed danger, then it slipped away. Tons of buck sign, fresh scrapes all over! When we checked two shootin shacks, they both had fresh bear sign around them. He said they have a female with 3 cubs, and a 400# male that wrecks their stuff regularly. The prints we found were something else! Great visit...

Went skurry hunting with the deaf uncle. Amazing how he can slip thru the woods so quietly in the dry leaves. We stayed back a ways to watch and keep the commotion down, and before we knew it bang, bang, and bang. Three grays down. Man they are fast and fidgety! We can't get over how small they are and how easy they skin. Nothing like our fox, or reds as they call them down here. I'll get Luke a license next year so he can have some fun. They worship skurries here like ribeye steak!
Both uncles want us to come back for rifle season. Maybe one of these days!
Otherwise, lots of good times. Rural King and other stores sure are stocked up way better than our local stuff. Walmarts and anything sporting goods are stocked with high power rifles, and not just el cheapos. Pretty impressive.
Leaving tomorrow for the homestead. Sad to see it come to an end already.

Yes, hunting in different areas, especially with one that KNOWS the woods is a real eye-opener. I agree that the outdoor stores around here are bleak and unimpressive compared to some other areas. Go to Wild Wings for anything that has to do waterfowl or bird hunting in Stuttgart, AR and you will be amazed. Go to a Scheels out West and it's the same way.
Come on back to the heat! It's supposed to be 83 degrees or so today, tomorrow in the upper 70's then the bottom falls out and the highs are in the 60's to 70's through the end of the month.
November 25th to Dec 8th is buck/antlerless deer season there this year. 2 bucks/year.
Depending on what county, Bear season runs off and on from late August through the end of the year.
