Wow. I had no clue what restaurant workers go through until the past week when I started training at Azzip's Pizza in Lafayette. Tuesday I came home just feeling super tired after my first day at work, which was nearly a 4 hour shift. Today I went in, not totally feeling the best from some meds I took last night (nausea; still feeling it). Worked for a little more than 3 hours, and had to deal with a lunch rush that was longer and far busier than usual. Started not feeling so hot a little after 1 1/2 hours. Feeling terrible at the end, got out early due to not having anything to do, and managed to make my own pizza (employees at Azzip's get free ones), talk with and meet an employee who had just come in, and also drive home. Got home and crashed. Nausea, super bad fatigue, feeling chilled, and believe it or not a exertional headache so bad I have lost some hearing. Apparently feeling sick after working restaurant shifts is common. Took Aleve, 2 Liquid IV drinks, Alka-Seltzer, and I think something else to help but can't remember. And a 2 hour nap, but still feeling fatigued and slow. Just laying here bundled up ready to sleep again if I can. If the headache would just leave I would probably feel good enough to go get my pizza off the table. Just based on a quick Internet search these headaches can last for anywhere from hours to 2 days. I also have raging hormones, plus thyroid disease and long COVID, so add in those factors and now I see 15 hours a week just might be my maximum (I told the manager 30 hours a week that will change when school starts in 2 weeks). I had a kitchen job for a few months in 2021 and I came home feeling horrid nearly every time (but had the COVID long vax; and undiagnosed thyroid disease). I also need to get into the habit of drinking while I working.

Yep, there is very little work that is easy. Maybe standing behind a cash register, but if you can't stand for long periods of time that is out too.
Lunch rush is probably the worst, everybody comes in at once and has to get out of there quick because they have a limited time to sit and eat then get back to work.

They told our kids at band camp if you do not come hydrated you will never catch up. Trying to hydrate will not help. Come hydrated and stay that way.

Sounds awful. I wish you the best. You got a long time to figure out your future.
On the flip side, my health is rocking! I just turned 50yo, and have been working 10-12hr days, 50+ hours a week to celebrate that milestone and fill up my piggybank. 😇 Working a job/career that you like or are passionate about makes all the difference. My passion is helping my customers and proving my loyalty to them.

The fist few days on a job are always tough. You're always "on edge" you don't know when to let down and take a breather, once you get to know the job you'll find the "break" within the work time.
On a side note I know one of the owners of AZZIP, pretty cool guy, I've met the other one and he seems genuine as well. He went to the same grade school, high school and college (I never graduated) as I did. Neat story on all that.

Long Covid can make you feel sick under stress, they say. My wife had two years of after-effects. She is careful to eat right, drink lots of water and get rest, and a B-complex and a multivitamin daily.

I don't drink anything other than water, the occasional tea, and the occasional soda. I have long COVID as well, so good guess on that. I have also discovered one of my medications is causing side effects but it's one I don't really need any more so trying to get off it. I ALSO have had scoliosis which put a lot of stress into the solar plexus and my myofascial therapy is loosening that up so that area isn't happy due to a new relaxed position. Still feeling terrible today after lots of yard work yesterday and a sleep deprived/insomnia filled night. And I have an astro club meeting tonight I might not go to plus some of my family is headed down to Indy tomorrow for the State Fair Myotonic Goat Show (to watch). The Newsboys are doing the concert tomorrow night at the Fair and I want to go. Right now though just laying around mostly spending time on my phone wat hing clips of the Olympics and trying to figure out how in the world I will sleep tonight. Had to go pick my brother up from work and could hardly get from the car to the house. Having Long COVID from 2 years ago then more from this winter, I am not completely surprised by any of this. I feel better than I did in May but still need to figure out some more treatment plus get off supplements and meds that may be making me sick. I've had a very rough 3 years and yes, getting a job that has a high physical demand is hard and stressful but I know I like it and will be able to do it better once I feel better! I made sure management knew of my issues.

Also making sure to drink water plus ear soft foods like ice cream and applesauce. I can tolerate fruits just fine and had some fried okra from the garden for "lunch".

My training manager said I will probably get to meet Brad at some point since apparently he likes to visit his stores now and then to check on everything.

I worked in a restaurant once, a loooonnnnggg time ago. It was The Humpty Dumpty Drive In Restaurant on south 41 in Evansville. Year was 1955 . I worked the soda fountain pulling soft drinks, floats, making malts and shakes, I dipped ice cream, sundaes, and splits x $5 for a 9 hour shift. We could eat anything at any time that we wanted except shrimp and steaks I did some short order cooking once in awhile Wilbern Newcomb was the owner. Every now ant then he would take over the register and call in orders. If it was busy and he couldn’t keep up he would just holler out “Load the grill!” We did everything we could to keep from laughing. Then the cashier that was in break has to hurry up and get back to straighten out the orders. Fun times ..

😅 Woody.
Feeling better today but had a nasty breakdown yesterday evening. Always happens. Long haul COVID is a beast. I've had to deal with the cognitive and mental status problems, the sleep issues, the hormone balance issues, the fluctuating changes in the neurological issues, etc, etc. I am also dealing with some decent weight gain issues that are more likely due to my thyroid and rather sedentary lifestyle along with the fluctuating appetite. And now I also have low immunoglobulins, so that's in the mix too. I think that once the long COVID and immunoglobulin stuff is dealt with I will be able to be back to being interested in my hobbies all the time, back to being able to work hard for hours at a time, and also have better control on my weight.
I am hoping that the manager will pick up on the fact that I have long COVID and so there may be times where I have to quit my shift early due to health issues.

Had another training shift yesterday evening and was able to handle a little more than 4 hrs of work due to seeing my myofascial therapist right before work. Got some labwork done but nothing of concern other than a few slightly high/slightly low labs that I've dealt with in the past. Feeling pretty good today - did some lawn mowing and chicken washing for State Fair Poultry Show prep as we take them in Friday. Have evening chores to do still and some trash burning as well. Back to work tomorrow afternoon.

So I found out today my issues aren't all stress... Infection No. 3 for me in the past 2 years, on an antibiotic now and due to some other health issues and some slight tingling in my toes that showed up yesterday I will be monitoring myself so that other more serious health issues either don't occur or are caught early.

Resturant work is no joke!
My first job, (shortly after the Bronze Age Collapse and before the rise of Assyria ) was as a dishwasher in a truck stop in New point Indiana. Talk about earning that $4.25 an hour!
Sounds like you are working despite some difficulties; I applaud you.

I am supposed to work a 4 1/2 hour shift tomorrow, however still not feeling good and cannot sleep properly no matter what I do. Really bad depression that feels a bit different from what I have experienced before. Insomnia, you name it. Yesterday a cough began, today muscle soreness. It is so hard to tell if it's all anxiety/depression or if it is anxiety/depression getting aggravated by medication withdrawal (from something I stopped taking one month ago for muscle stiffness) and medication side effects (from the stuff I was on for the gut infection). I got pale with headache and vision changes a few days ago. And yesterday morning nearly fainted. We don't know what is going on but it sure is being disruptive, big time! Not my first rodeo though....
