I placed an order for a case of 250 3" 1-1/4oz. #3 and a case of 250 3" 1-1/4oz BB. Roger's Sporting Goods had them on sale for $179.00 plus I used my reward points for an additional $50 off. The order came with free shipping as well. I think I made out pretty good.
I have watched a plethora or reviews on the Federals and they seem to perform really well. I used them this past goose season and liked the results as well.

Everybody does it for turkeys, why not other birds?

I will take a pallet and put masking paper across it and the duck target in the center so I can see how the whole pattern looks. I'll try all of my choke tubes at their recommended ranges as well. I think/hope I'll have a good understanding of the patterns and chokes when I'm done as well as my set-ups limitations.

That is a good deal. I used to religiously use 4s for ducks and BBs for geese. Anymore I grab whatever I can find.
Pattering guns is for nerds! Just shoot some clays and let her eat. Half the fun is shooting, hate to limit out in 2 vollies. Lol...just kidding I would love to limit out at least 1 more time! When that happens I will see if I want another limit....but probably!

I cannot wait to get my first limit! But, right now, I'm more focused and excited about getting my first wood duck and drake mallard!

After that, so long you are in a decent area...easy. Back in the day I always wanted a drake wigeon, we had a group suck right into the decoys. 3 of up pulled up and birds just folded. All were fully feathered widgeons. Of course when I pulled up the shoulder strap got hung and I wasn't shooting. That 1 burned for a while.

What would be interesting to see is how the 2 sizes of shot pattern in the same choke tube at the same distance. You might find that different sized shot needs a different choke tube to perform best.

I bought a three pack of the Carlson Deltas that cover close range, mid range and long range. I'll be testing them all! That in itself will be a good time!

I always shoot 4s in early season for ducks. Then go to 2s and 3s later. 1s (if you can find them) or BBs for geese.

Well, how did the pattern testing go? I hadn't completed it yet. That's on my agenda next week.

It does look high, but you most likely killed a duck each time.

Closest I have come to pattering any shotgun or ammo was shooting into the water.
I know that I should. Most targets are moving erratically, I am either sitting, laying down and usually freezing cold with some adrenaline pumping. My guess is the gun, choke and shell will do their job if I can do my part. No reason to confirm that I am the reason I missed....yet again.

Did you cover the bird with the bead or float the bird over the bead? When you mount the gun (if it has a mid rib bead) is the mid rib bead behind the front bead, a figure "8" pattern or is there space between the mid rib bead and the front bead?
It's best to close your eyes, shoulder the shotgun, put your cheek on the stock then open your eyes. If the gun isn't fitting you properly, then the beads won't line up like they are supposed to. For a field gun, typically the mid rib bead is super imposed on the front bead.

I lined up directly on the center of the duck. Pretty much on the target's bullseye.
My gun only has the one front sight.
As for floating the gun below the duck, a couple of the guys that got me addicted to this thing, told me that they always aim just below the ducks in the field.
It'd be nice to shoot some clays before season maybe.

Not visible. I have a picatinny rail on top of the receiver for my turkey sight. I'm looking through the center picatinny rails to see the front sight. The picatinny mount have like a "V" in the center. My turkey sight has been removed.

The picatinny mount have like a "V" in the center. My turkey sight has been removed. Can you take off the picatinny rail? That might be causing you to have your head higher on the stock to see over the P rail to see the front bead and causing the shotgun to shoot high. Your eye is the rear "sight" on a shotgun, the higher your head is in relation to the front bead, the higher the gun will shoot.
