I have never turkey hunted but my son wants to give it a go. Got a blind, a couple decoys, and have had him pattern his gun. When you go out in the morning about how long before sunrise do you like to be set up? Legal time is a half hour before sunrise. In my area sunrise is 5:51 AM CST.I would try and be in the blind no later than 4:45 am cst. So an hour before sunrise is good. Walk in when it is dark. Do not use a flashlight. Good luck and have fun making memories! PS.. be sure and post your adventures here! + 1 WOODY'S COMMENTS

I like getting out there early enough to set up, relax and have a cup of coffee or two before the birds start gobbling. As for the rest of the day, they can be pretty much hunted all day. Mid day is good as well as late afternoon. Good luck and kudos to you for taking him out! Hunt safe and God bless!

I'm not feeling too confident but sitting in a blind overlooking a small clearing. Maybe one will work it's way over here in the rain.

If there's a way to screw up turkey hunting I find it. Never heard a gobble. Damn bird snuck in silent to my decoys and saw something fishy in the blind and got spooky. I hurried the shot and missed at not 20 yards. That hurts.

Back at it today, set up on public 150 yards from a private field. Seen one way out there. Guessing it was the one bird I heard gobble far off this morning. Hopefully things pick up when the rain clears

I’m fishing and can see birds in all the fields. They love the fields in a gentle rain.

I was hoping to get out this morning, but a long week and late night put the kibosh on it. I'm getting out early tonight to be ready for morning. We did get a blind up yesterday at a different property, so we have fresh scenery.

When you go out in the morning about how long before sunrise do you like to be set up? Blinds and decoys are purely optional. We kill most of ours with just a call and a shotgun. How early depends on how far we need to walk before we get to roosting areas. Sometimes we leave the truck right at gobble time (approx 30 - 40 min before sunrise), but if we need to walk a ways before being in hearing range of where they roost, then we leave earlier. If you get bored sitting in the blind, get on some public land and walk until you hear a gobble. Then get as close as you can without spooking him, then call him in and kill him!

Gave the turkeys a break today with the rainy weather and no blinds (truth be known I think I needed a break! LOL) Been helping my neighbor's wife get things together for the viewing/funeral which was more important anyway. Will get after em tomorrow. I knew he would shoot at Columbus on Thursdays but didn't realize he a member of the Columbus Gun Club Hall of Fame or that he started shooting there in the mid 80s. Also shot at Coffee Creek and Indian Creek. No wonder he was a dang good dove shooter.
Good luck to those who are still chasing them durn birds and congrats to those who have been successful.

I follow this thread pretty close, but I don't post much. In the 90's, I hunted turkeys with as much determination as I currently hunt deer. I pretty much became a weekend warrior,at best. I went out for the second time this year this morning. Rainy and nasty, but lots of gobbling! I heard 5-8 different birds on the roost in 3 directions. I set up at the edge of a small field surrounded by spoil banks. I had several responses to soft yelps and clucks. Around 7:45,it was a downpour. Decided to shut up and wait about 10 minutes later,2 twin gobblers came in gobbling and strutting at 25ish yards. BANG! Around 23 lbs. 9 inch beard,1 inch spurs! Good enough for me, good luck and keep posting.

Well I can't seem to find the birds. Went out again last night and heard the property owners' turkeys but nothing else. I am also struggling terribly with sitting still. Probably moved 5 times last night. And the mosquitoes didn't give me a single moment's peace. I've been just finding a decent tree and sitting in my dark green camp chair. Have a lightweight long sleeve camo shirt I wear, but have been also wearing blue jeans (dark ones) as I can't find a pair of lightweight camo pants. In texting back and forth with one of the owners last night I found out that they haven't seen a turkey for a few weeks either. And that this became common after the field across from them which was in alfalfa fir years got tilled last fall. All the usual roosts are empty. Didn't see any turkey sign either. However the deer are still super active there and once when I stood up I see a strange log behind me that I knew hadn't been there and it was a buck who'd seen me stand up. He didn't know what I was and actually came about 15 yards closer. I had to move to spook him away because I couldn't handle standing still much longer. I ended up leaving early due to lack of turkeys and too many of those big spotted Asian mosquitoes. Silly things wouldn't leave me along even when I swatted some of them away.
