There's a rumor going around that a small black bear was hit and killed on st. road 64 near Arthur Junction in Pike Co.. That was yesterday or Friday. This is fourth handed info, supposedly a conservation officer saw the critter. I find this hard to believe but it's not the first time that bear sign has been reported in that area. Anybody else heard about this?

Never herd of any in 1980.

Correct Rabbit, it never ceases to amaze me how many people think there is a black bear or mountain lion behind every bush in Indiana. Indiana DON'T HAVE THE HABITAT to support bears or Lions. I will probaly catch heck for saying that but its the truth.

I will never believe Indiana has a wild population of Bears or Lions. Although it may be possible for large cats or wolves to migrate thru along the river systems. Bobcats are here though.

The only way I see it could have happened is if 1 escaped from some where. (which hopefully would have been reported)
Clarification: I was commenting in regards to the original topic.

Now come on. There are no confirmed reports of bear being in Kentucky. The three that were seen and one shot down by the families place have no official record with KDFWR.

Must have been a small bear as the track isn't much bigger than the leaf. I'm not doubting you but it still looks like a dog track. h.h.

There is definitely bears in Harlan Co. KY as I've been riding there and seen them myself. If anyone hasn't been there and wants a place to go for a weekend or longer to ride that's the place to go!
There was a bear spotted down around Lake Monroe a couple years ago, it was reported in the local paper. The bear must have been passing thru because you heard about it for a week or so maybe two then no more about it.
As far as Indiana habitat not being able to support bears I beg to differ. Our southern landscape is made up of much the same trees and plants that you find in the Smokies and many of the eastern states that support a healthy bear population. In fact in the early 1800's Indiana had a decent bear population before the white man came and killed them all off much like they killed off the bison that roamed our northern plains.

What happened to the post before "firstwd"? Somehow it has disapeared. And who made you two judge of what I saw. It is a common sighting in that area. There are even warning signs in many parts of these trails. I posted these pictures for a little humor, not to be judged by the local "Pros". I still stand by what I saw when I took these pictures. That post went were all others go that are meaningless and take cheap shots at members. No one is judging you but since you seem to be all upset at someone disputing your bear track picture that is an obvious dog or coyote track then show me where there is any comparison of these black bear tracks to your picture? h.h. www.bear-tracker.com/bear.htmlwww.bear-tracker.com/coyote.html

MrFixit,
The reported bear sighting by Lake Monroe was by one single person that I have known for years. Now this guy is a huge outdoorsman and I would usually believe what he says he seen but in this circumstance it was late at night, very dark and a fair distance away from him....

Yes a bear could survive in Southern Indiana but it could not live and survive without being seen with regularity due to the large number of people that live here in our area (Greene county on south). There just is simply not enough square miles of unbroken timber to support a Black bear population in southern indiana.

Bentwrench,
No one is disputing what you say you saw but if you look at your pictures the print is in wet sand and deep and clearly shows its a coyote or dog track. A bear would leave a full set of prints in wet sand.
Next look at the scat. You said the bear was leaving the scat when you saw it and left before you could get your camera and take a picture. The scat is old enough to be some what dried up, not from an animal that just left it.
I'm not saying you didn't see a bear but the track you posted isn't a bear and the scat is too old to be just left. Maybe you saw this track first and thought it was the bear's and maybe the bear track was up a little farther.
I'm glad you post and look forward in reading more of them. Now, this is the last I will say about the subject. h.h.

Well it's been awhile and I can't remember all the details or at the very minimum they are fuzzy at best but wasn't it seen several other times during daylight hours and wasn't there pictures of the tracks printed in the Herald Times or was it reported in the paper that a CO that said it looked like bear tacks. Dang I can't remember, sucks getting old and contracting CRS lol. I remember it being in the paper several days in over the course of a week or so then nothing more about it.
