On paper looked to be a great day, in reality nothing moving. Owen cty. [br. Tempatures in 70's end of October don't equate to good deer movement during daytime from my past experience. Once the cold front comes through is when daytime activity will increase.

Fairly slow hunt for us. Very thankful for treestand umbrellas and the rain stopping before dark. We had a doe about 400 yards out in a cut corn field maybe an hour before dark. Saw a 4 point enter the field 150 yards away with maybe 25 minutes of legal light left. I figured nothing to lose so I grunted at him. He stepped a few yards closer and my daughter said to grunt again.
He stood still maybe 2 minutes then came all the way across the field on a string with me calling ranges to her the whole time. When he got to 26 yards he stopped slightly quartering forwards and she let the bolt fly. The buck hauled tail back to where he entered the field.
We got down and couldn't find any blood or the bolt. We zigzagged across the field in the fading light with our flashlights back to where we thought he entered the woods and still nothing. I had a bad feeling about heavy rains and morning searching when she said that she saw him. He made it just inside the woods before dying.
The bolt went through the near shoulder, one lung, clipped the liver before exiting. Gut material plugged the exit hole. Not a drop of blood found between the shot site and him.
Finally got him quartered and on ice. Rehabbing gear tomorrow. This is her last buck as a youth hunter. She was very excited. It's not her biggest buck, but it was a fun hunt.

We had one buck come out at 61yds. It looked decent, so we quick got the xbow turned and Luke at the ready. At 45yds, he stopped and threw his head up when he got our wind. Im working the rangefinder and calling the shots on distance, angle, demeanor, etc, but Luke decides if he wants to pull the trigger or not. It ended up being a 4 point, but not a small forkie, rather a deficient tined semi-mature looking buck. I'd guess 130#. He hot footed out of there in a few seconds. I was sad the wind was wrong, but we set the blind up for the typical prevailing wind direction, and expected the deer to come from the opposite direction anyway. Luke was not disappointed, but stoked! Then he says he wasnt gonna shoot that one anyway! Fooled me! Lol. Good times.

I'm up to see what todays weather brings, and check a pork butt on the smoker. Rain is done, but the dang wind is blowing pretty stiff, and worse its NE. Anything with an E is no good for archery or a ground blind where we are at. Forecast shows rain again for this afternoon. Just great. I guess there is just no winning sometimes.

Just pulled up to our entrance to the woods. Seen 3 doe in a johnson grass patch on the edge of a cut cornfield about ⅜ of a mile from where we park. Usually when we see deer during our drive in, we see deer movement in the woods. Ground hunting this morning with little to no wind movement, so only time will tell. Rain moves back in here around Noonish according to the hourly, but I've come to use it as a "reference only" tool. Good luck this morning and be careful heading to the stand/blind

Had "Handlebars" my wide 8 I've had three encounters with at about 45 yds just b4 8. The "east" wind was kind bouncing around, ten more steps to a shooting lane and he stopped, smelled a rat and took off. He's been lucky, or good three times now.

Decided to sit it out and not screw up our areas with a bad wind. Now its drizzling like all heck at home.
So with that, we are heading out to set up another blind option, and let the rain wash out some scent.
Gonna confirm zero on our guns, then chow on some pulled pork and try to get some rest and relax for once.
Get em boys!
