Went on the front porch to get some more firewood and there’s two deer walking along the side of the ridge headed towards our creek bottom. I go to the garage, grab the crossbow, and sneak out the back door along the opposite side of our property. I could hear them browsing around and they weren’t in no hurry to go anywhere. I made it to my food plot and just sat there the last half hour without seeing them again. Nice to at least see some deer again. Heard turkeys fly up too.

Really random question for everyone: have you guys gotten pictures of fox squirrels in the middle of the night? I have never gotten pictures of squirrels outside of day light hours, however, lately I have been getting pictures of squirrels (primarily fox squirrels) at all times of the night. Just wondering if this is fairly normal or if it’s odd to anyone else. Haven't had any on camera but when using my thermal at night hunting yotes I do see squirrels, not coons or flying squirrels but regular squirrels come out of their drey and go back in. Never knew how many flying squirrels there are until I got my thermal. Was looking thru it when I got it and thought I was watching big mice running around till they went up the tree and jumped to or flew to the next one.

I have pics of flying squirrels at a deer feeder at night, never during the day and have never gotten a regular squirrel on cam at night.

I've been told that if it is hot enough in early season that squirrels will feed before sunrise. I can't prove that because I've never tried hunting them before daylight.

Had a little time before dark so here I sit behind the house. Hoping this front moving in will have them moving early towards this ag field I can see.

5 does so far. Came down a neighbors ridge heading towards the field. Just too far away. Think that’s the most deer I’ve seen during one sit all season.
Edit to add: this tidewe heated vest is nice.

I will also add that it’s amazing what a good pair of socks can do to keep your feet warm. I got some Darn Tough over the calf socks for Christmas and they did a much better job at keeping my feet warm than any other socks I’ve owned.

I have pics of flying squirrels at a deer feeder at night, never during the day and have never gotten a regular squirrel on cam at night. Flying squirrels are nocturnal and they eat meat too.

Yea, I’ve gotten pics of flying squirrels too, but these pics I’m talking about are definitely fox squirrels. I’ve gotten more than a handful in the last 2 months in multiple locations ranging from midnight to an hour before sunrise. Never seen it before.

What a magical morning in the woods. As I was walking to my stand this morning a light snow started to spit. By the time first light arrived the woods had turned white. Had what I think was a fox come thru before light and had 2 does come in out of range at light.

I hunted my permission piece by JP last night. Good sit as I saw several deer. Just no shot opportunities. Couple mistakes on my end as I decided to not sit in my blind which was positioned in the timber. I opted to sit on the edge of the field and left myself too exposed and got picked off rather easily. The deer didn't necessarily spook but, they did notice me and were leary about getting into range. After the field had cleared and well after night fall, I went and grabbed my ground blind and relocated it to the field edge near an already existing brush pile. I took several oak branches that still had leaves and placed them around and on top of my blind to brush it in.
I know it's late in the game for this sort of thing but, I did not like being that exposed. I'll give it a go this afternoon and see what happens.
Good luck everyone that's still grinding it out. Hunt safe and God bless!

Just got setup for the evening. Not much wind so hopefully got in clean. Snow is melting off so sounds like it’s raining. Maybe that’ll help.

Had some coming at me then the guy across the street fired up his tractor 400+ yards away and they spooked like he was right next to them. That’s late late season to a T right there. We’ll see if they wonder back.

All set and ready to go 🤞. The melting snow definitely sounds like rain. Deer will be slipping right by without me noticing. Lol

Completely different afternoon here. Yesterday, I saw deer enter into the field from every different direction, squirrels running all over, turkeys chattering and the sandhill cranes flying like crazy. Cranes are flying today but, not nearly like they were yesterday. Only one squirrel quietly walking through. No turkey chatter and not a single deer so far.
