Did Indiana law change? Last I knew, thermal of any sort (drone or otherwise) was illegal for deer recovery in Indiana.

Just got out of the woods. Didn't see any does like I wanted, but had a spike and small 8 pt come in browsing to 30 yards, and half an hour later another spike came right under me, got tipped off, and circled the stand within 5 yards for a little bit and we even made eye contact a few times but he stayed rather calm and eventually moved behind me and browsed his way out. Heard other animals, and also at least 15 shots with the largest grouping between 5:10 and 5:35ish.

Made it to gun opener in a long while. Misplaced my harness so had to dig for an old one....bit later than I wanted but made it. Very nice morning so far. Very quiet with the wet leaves and zero wind First one since I was 13 I missed Hard to see a grown man cry. Got 1 tied up for span! All he had to do was belly crawl through cow patties and sticker bushes

Here is a message from a CO on the subject……. Below is the response we have been providing to this question. As a hunter, a person would want to be very cautious in utilizing the service as the violation would fall on the hunter and not the drone provider. The statute specifically prohibits a person from utilizing a UAV as an aid in “taking” the wild animal. Please refer to the definition of take provided in the statute below. It has been determined that utilizing a UAV to track a DEAD deer would not constitute a violation of the statute. Since the animal is already dead, the act of “take” is already complete. The UAV cannot be used in taking a deer but it can be used in an effort to find a deer that has already been taken. Many of you would be quick to point out that often, when a hunter shoots a deer and does not find it, they do not “know for sure” that the deer is dead. In a situation where a UAV was used to track a deer that had been shot but the deer is found to still be alive, the hunter could not legally utilize information gained from the UAV to go to the area and finish the deer off. To do so would violate the provision of the statute that prohibits the use of a UAV to assist the individual in the “taking” of a deer. However, a clear violation would be to utilize the location provided by the UAV to immediately pursue the deer. Exiting the area and then checking on the location some time later to determine if the deer expired would be a better scenario that I think all of us could agree is legal

Had a doe with fawn go by at 40 yards, 3 minutes later hear another deer and out steps a good looking buck nose to the ground. Hit the grunt twice and he didn't even think about looking. Tracked her out of the thicket and she busted back through the way she came in with him on her tail. Was hoping she would run back in closer but no such luck. Try again tomorrow.

While it is a gray area to use a drone if the deer is DEAD, it's definitely illegal to use thermal to retrieve a dead deer.
