I'm finally home from todays hunt. My grandson smoked a doe from ~170 yards with the 6.5 Creedmoor with 6 minutes of legal shooting light left so we had to take care of that. I told Tyler as we walked to the stand this morning that my Trapdoor trigger is gettin' itchy and that anything around a basket rack or better is gonna eat one of stevein's handloaded 50-70 rounds. He asked me how far out I'd go and I told him I'd stick to 50-70 yards depending on the conditions. In the past, I'd gained some confidence with the help of jtkelly on marksmanship with iron sights. And for some reason, this rifle just seems to fit the bill for me. We went to our individual stands. I was fidgeting with my cameras shortly after legal light. And then, I noticed movement out of the corner of my right eye. A quick look through the binoculars and I saw antlers and decided that it was more than a Forky so as far as I was concerned it was Game on! I first saw him at 150 yards or so and he continued to close the distance. About 120 yards he was behind branches. As I put the bead on him, I notice that the soon to rise sun made my sights a perfect glint! As he reached one of my previously ranged 110 yard marks, I cocked the hammer and belched a loud grunt. He stopped mostly broadside and looked my way. To the best of my ability, I put the leveled bead of the ole rifle smack dab on his front shoulder. My practice indicated impact around 3 inches high. Trigger squeezed! Smoke filling the air! I couldn't see the immediate reaction of the deer. But, some 30 yards from the shot, I watched the buck flop and drop! The 5 pointer ain't no big bruiser! But he is a super special deer to me! And to know the excitement of my Army Ranger buddy that owns this Trapdoor is priceless! There was no definitive blood trail. And a bit to my surprise, the lead boolit did a complete pass through with very little expansion. Entry: Exit: To all of you that helped make this possible, A huge thank you! And to stevein, a new found Hunt-Indiana friend within this past year (who likes a good pile of lunch grub as much as me)... Well ole buddy, THANK YOU! You truly made this mission a reality!

This really is a neat story, I especially like the discovery and repair of the firing pin as well as Stevein's work on the rounds. The test fire had me rolling "gangsta" style HA! I would bet the pucker factor came into play that day!

Excellent job!! Do ya feel like a Buffalo hunter? I don’t know that I would go that far! But I must say that there is a most satisfying feeling to take a deer with such an old gun with my aging eyes on iron sights! As I sat up in the stand for many hours, hoping for the chance to complete the mission I found my mind running with all kinds of thoughts. Everything from wondering about the last time the rifle was fired before landing in my hands. All of you that helped make this possible! The first time I pulled the trigger with trepidation of the live round. Admiring the “engineering” being the mechanics and conversion. Had this rifle ever seen action. Had it ever taken the life of an American Indian! Or a Buffalo…🤠
