Almost all deer with antlers will have more meat than deer with no antlers.I know of no one that will kill a deer with antlers and not eat the meat! Also what goes on the wall will last a lifetime vs what goes in the belly that only last a few days. A customer of mine horn hunts and doesn't eat the meat, but he will give the carcass away. He doesn't like deer meat. There is always someone I guess…. But it sounds like nothing is going to WASTE!

I'll bet deer meat is a whole lot more popular this year. Beef and chicken prices are too high gor me to buy on a regular basis, I usually give one deer to my brother I might shoot an extra this year and split it with him. 1 and 1/2 each sounds pretty good to me.

I'm glad they donate the meat and it does not go to waste, but I just don't get hunters that are only after the antlers. Varmints are a complete other category. No way would I eat a coyote, possum, or a rat. Those are killed solely to eliminate problems or control populations. Almost all deer with antlers will have more meat than deer with no antlers.I know of no one that will kill a deer with antlers and not eat the meat! Also what goes on the wall will last a lifetime vs what goes in the belly that only last a few days. Several years back I used to watch the Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel and it showed quite a few hunts that ended with the meat all being donated as the show hosts were on to their next antler hunt. I've got plenty of antlers on the walls of my reloading room. I'm more interested in meat for the freezer. I'm not as much about the wall decorations now as much as I am to getting back to what hunting was really about: food.

You can buy food as cheap as you can hunt for it usually …. But the price for a hunting experience is priceless!

You can buy food as cheap as you can hunt for it usually …. But the price for a hunting experience is priceless! Then again, once you have all the gear, and own or have permission to hunt on a certain property, then the cost isn't that high. Even at $100 to have a deer processed, compared to what beef costs per pound it's cheap.

The second article seemed closer to my situation, I think I could come out ahead if I only gun hunted but bow hunting, as frustrating as it can be, is a lot of fun, hanging out with Dad is priceless as well. I will shoot a doe in bow season if she's not being chased but the does tend to get a pass on the first day of gun season for me. Everything is relative all the #'s given in either article can be tweaked. I would go hunting anyway even if I didn't think I'd get something that day. Might as well take something home if I have the chance.

HA!
Using the first one, I own the land. No drive time, it's a 10 minute walk from the back door. Processing fee is half of that. No license fee - lifetime license. Ammo? I load my own and have enough components for a long, long time. Travel expenses? 9 miles to the processor one-way. I have 3 large freezers, and have had them for around 20 years. Gun? It cost more than that, but it's going on 14 years old.
So my input vs. output for the deer is very low.
