As I sit in the twilight I hear fireworks and parties in distance. I know they mean well or are probably ignorant of the meaning of Memorial Day. To my knowledge I've not lost any family members to war but for those of you that have I am so very sorry for your loss and deeply thankful for the service your loved one gave. I reflect on my lost relatives and friends over this year and years past, I pray that those that served and fell know my gratitude, I pray that my loved ones and friends know the love of God and are there in heaven together. Please take a moment this evening or tomorrow to remember why we take pause this extended weekend and remember those that fell for our freedom!

Agreed...
I've seen several posts on FaceBook wishing others "Happy Memorial Day". "Happy"? Nope, not what it is about. It's a day of remembrance and being thankful for the supreme sacrifice of others to buy our freedom.
Another thorn for me are numerous retail outfits and ads saying "Memorial Day Sale". Making money off "Memorial Day"? That is so wrong to me. Have all the sales they want to, but please leave "Memorial Day" off of it.

I went thru school with my neighbor. (He live a mile behind me in the woods). He was as always a happy, smiling person. He went in the military right after school. Did 8 years and several deployments. He did come home the same. And I'm sure some of you know exactly what I mean by that. Yesterday he was doing a lot of shooting. Combat shooting, mag dumps, etc. To some, it probably sounded like he was having some fun. To me, it sounded like he was going through a lot of pain. Remembering those that didn't return and the things he saw. Although he did make it home, he still left a part of him there and brought some parts of there back here. I have a lot of compassion for those who returned with PTSD. And although I know that today is to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, I still remember those who came home suffering. He's a great guy and I enjoy hunting upland birds over his dogs.

It has always pained me that a lot of people do not recognize the significance and importance of memorial day. I returned from Vietnam in 1968, unscathed for the most part. More than 58,000 did not return the same way they left, some were friends of mine ,it is a day to remember them.RIP

For my nephew Andy. Died in the service but not in combat.
He was in a KC-135 that went down with a full load of fuel on takeoff. They were headed to the Philipines and were supposed to fuel a flight of fighters somewhere over the Pacific.
