From Joe..... Hey Everyone, Just FYI – we updated the data from the Deer Management Survey for questions we ask every year (i.e., opinions toward deer management, opinions of deer population, desired direction of deer harvest, etc.) and that information is available at www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/animals/white-tailed-deer/deer-management-survey-results/ County Deer Data with the various county statistics has also been updated and those can be found at www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/animals/white-tailed-deer/county-data/ We are working on the next year’s deer report that will have the results of the other questions that were asked, such as the questions about the lifetime licenses, deer feeding, etc., as well as our internal research on questions like the effects of EHD in the southeastern portion of the state, the effects of deer reduction zones along highways, and other questions we have been studying this past year. That will still take a while to get out as we are also dealing with changes to the legislation that affects the rule process, which inadvertently affects how we set the county antlerless deer quotas. Previously, we used the Emergency or Temporary Rule process since those change from year to year. But we can no longer use the Emergency Rules for that purpose because of a recent change to the law from House Bill 1623. Therefore we are working on determining what mechanism we will use to set those quotas going forward. Please feel free to pass on this information to anyone who may be interested. As always, please let me know if you have any questions about anything. Cheers, joe Joe N. Caudell, Ph.D.

One thing very interesting is the no change in deer vehicle collision even though the number of deer is down almost in half. I checked three counties and the same. Less deer, flat deer vehicle collision.

Less deer, flat deer vehicle collision. Most major deer vehicle collisions are on or near major highways not back roads 2 lane roads.Has to be major over populated to effect rual areas.

I agree, but you always read and hear about all the insurance concerns. Not truly a concern.

Co is a small county so deer vehicle collisions are not going to be crazy high. Of course big difference between 100 and 1000 so hard to judge by this graph , but I am certain there are less deer/vehicle accidents after deer reduction , than before it.

On the far left you can see base 0 thin line. Since the car and damage at on base 0 then the number of each car and damage must be close to 0. If you take each 1000 unit into ten 100 sub unit the data still is below 100 most years

I understand. My point being is that since the planned deer reductions, deer/vehicle collisions have dropped substainially . In addition the IDNR still uses reduction zones, which target highly traveled roadways across the state.

Yeah reduction zones formally know as “urban zones” were in place many years before the 2012-2016 reduction plan. The DNR is now targeting certain areas with reduction zones…..I doubt these areas ever go away.

Agree. I do like the newer targeted zones of cities and areas along major roads vs. old system of whole county being in zone.
