Permits can be issued for unlimited per DNR. Depends on area, and amount damage.

Not that it will make a difference, but I intend to talk to Joe or somebody else that'll listen to my side of things.
The thing that tops it all off is that he doesn't even own this land, only leases it. I own my land. It is his opinion only that there are too many deer in the area, not mine or the people that lease that very land for deer hunting. Why does one person get to make such drastic management decisions for an entire area?
He said he received the permits the same day he applied, and just had to email a picture of crop damage to the biologist.

I find it hard to believe an area currently , after all the reductions, would require unlimited permits.

I know this guy fairly well, our kids go to school together, his family does own a farm a mile or so up the road. They've been good neighbors. I don't want a rift to develop, but it seems more unreasonable the more that I think about it.
I hope he kills a few and gets the bloodlust out of his system. My mind is going through the worst-case scenarios, but things may not be as bad as I fear.

In early 90's had a farmer/ins. client that farmed next to state park, who killed over a 100 deer one summer. Hard to believe population would warrent that today?

It sounds like permits are typically granted for a certain number of deer, then the permit holder must reapply for additional deer.
I'm not sure if there is a misunderstanding on the farmer's end or if he is just confident he can get as many more permits as he needs.

Raccoons cause most of the damage.

See if you can talk to the deer biologist for the area to get someone to physically look at the crop damage. I "heard" up to 10 tags per acre. But don't have anything in writing to back it up.

I’ll bet coons are doing more damage than the deer….. On beans? Corn yes… Definitely on corn and it wouldn’t surprise me on beans either. They’re destructive critters along with a variety of other wild animals. I don’t believe many farmers in today’s world are losing out on enough yields to notice the “damage”….IMO.
