Those yearling steelhead could be a foot long if they were fed well at the hatchery.

All non-native!
I don't mind but man it is funny the govt will spend all kinds of resources to fight non-native then turn around and stock non-natives.
I will stick to crappie and cats anyways

I will stick to crappie and cats anyways We played enough games with shore fishing for trout and salmon last year or few with low success, but lots of fun. So, other than spring coho which are in great numbers, we will be doing all inland fishing from our boat as well from now going forward.

Yeah I am not saying if I wasn't closer I wouldn't take advantage of those foreigners. Just ironic at times. They stretch the line and eat ok

FWIW What you guys don't know there actually is/was some science behind the stocking of Salmon in the great lakes besides the economic benefits to the state. Back when the alewife invaded(50 60 yrs ago) the states and federal govt were looking for a way to control the species and determined the native lake trout(apex predator) was not abundant enough and didn't spend enough time at the depths alwife lived so tried the salmon. In the last few decades numbers of salmon stockings have been a balance of science based on alwife populations and sportsman pressure. Today approximately 25 to 30% of the king salmon(best predator for alwife populations) is made of from natural recruitment. The Betsie river gets no stocking because it has tremendous natural reproduction for instance. The steelhead(which are nothing more than lake run rainbow trout) Michigan stock are exclusively from captures of Manistee river strain which is a naturally reproducing population that established itself way before the salmon program came into effect.

Steve If you ever get up that way stop at the fish weir when they come up the river it’s kind of cool to watch them I believe it was on the little Manistee most people fish the big Manistee Years back if you had a tag they would give you a fish after they harvested the eggs believe that went away

I was fishing the Betsie at the time. Steve

Steve You are on the mark. The stocking of salmon in the great lakes has been a great success story. Made a trip to AK two years ago and ran into a gentleman that worked for the Wisconsin DNR and was heavily involved in this project when first started. Very interesting guy to talk to and quite a story.

Years back I had a cabin by tippy dam I shared it with my sister wasn’t to bad normally we just worked out whenever we’d be up other than big weekends it worked. I fished all over mostly in my boat I had a bigger one for the big water I’d fish the rivers sometimes but I didn’t care for all the people stacked up, Sold my half back to my sister and sold the boat hated selling the boat but trying to pull that to MI or Erie and than fill the boat up just got to be much cash
