Tyler and I are totally amazed. This gun is amazing and phenomenally accurate. Neither of us have used a rear peep sight like the Mossberg S-130 on this rifle. And WOW! I really don't think a scope would show much improvement, at least at the 15 yards we were shooting. This was my first 10 shots: We were using one of the front "flip-up" posts. And then we started to discuss the option of using a totally white background. So, we simply flipped the target and made our own "bullseye." These are my shots at 15 yards as I was adjusting the sight to the right. We're not too concerned with elevation at this point since we don't have a good handle on distances yet. Then things got real intense as we began to realize how accurate this rifle shoots. Tyler drew a different square with a single line down the middle, thinking he could match the front post to the target line. After his 5 shots he says, "That's crazy Grandpa! I'm stopping there! I'm gonna frame this!!!" Never in either of our shooting experiences have we seen this kind of accuracy. Granted, he was rested on the Caldwell bag. But still! Freaking amazing! Neither of us will probably ever replicate this! No joke...this was his 5 shot group at 15 yards!

You can beat a bolt action 22… I got a Winchester model 310 for Christmas in 75 it was dead accurate also!
Happy plinking…..

Outstanding! I love ya introducing a young guy to irons and peep sights. Now is the time while they still have eagle eyes. Looks like you got a couple of keepers right there.
Try using that front post with the big dot and a hole in the center of it. I bet you'll like that on white paper with one little dot on it.

I got everything assembled and it seemed as though the rifle was functioning well! I'll post some other pics soon. For now, Back from the range and here is a quick snippet of the action: www.youtube.com/shorts/K32yFW6-paQThat trigger is adjustable I believe.

I agree that the peep is great, but if you ever want to mount a scope on that rifle, Havlin sales has a base/ring setup for it. #ITEM: 274M long offset rings, matte black pair: $38. There is a picture of them. Either way, they are fun guns to shoot and (as you have experienced) very accurate.

I'm still amazed at the accuracy from this S-130 rear peep sight and the optional flip up posts/ring on the front sight. Here are some pics for kicks: I called Havlin today since I would like to order a hood for the front sight and the green/red inserts for the rear safety indicators. I called a little too late since their hours are 9-2. I know I could order online but I have a few other questions and I want to talk to someone live! We're cleaning and working on the rifle now. I really like doing a project like this with my grandson. I believe he is gaining some skills along the way and we both are learning a bunch about the mechanism and early engineering/design from decades past!

The things he is learning are invaluable and not many his age would have any clue if he was discussing with them. Good on you and looks like a fun project.

You can be VERY accurate with the round front peep and the round rear peep. Put up a black round circle. Make sure the same amount of white is showing around the black circle inside the front peep sight, and at the same time make sure there is the same amount of "air" showing around the front round peep when looking through the rear peep. In college, I shot 3 position rifle with an Anschutz 1413 Rifle single stage trigger, butt hook, palm rest, peep front and rear. If I did my part prone, I could shoot a perfect score prone, and do pretty well kneeling and standing. I believe my 2nd and last year shooting I averaged 294 or 295. Each position was worth 100 points. These are the targets that we used. They have the center dot that is about the size of the head of a pin. www.midwayusa.com/product/101520265?pid=112282We'd occasionally see these targets and we called them girl scout targets because they didn't have the center dot that you had to cut with the bullet. www.midwayusa.com/product/1015205858?pid=383280These were made for a peep front and rear sight. So, don't dismiss peep sights for shooting paper. The peep/post is pretty good for hunting, but it makes shooting in low light difficult.

The more we mess around with this rifle, the more we learn! As we tried to reinsert the bolt after cleaning, we found that it would not go fully into battery. Frustrated, we searched the internet and we found a lot of people having the same issue. Maybe we didn't search long enough but we found no real answers so we slept on it and pondered the solution with a fresh set of eyes. It's actually pretty simple. The T'bolt handle must not be fully set to a stop. It needs to be backed off a bit so the slot in the bolt can easily line up with the tab in the chamber. Maybe these pics help demonstrate:
