Bills are starting to show up for this year's legislative session. So far nothing has appeared for Natural Resources. There is a bill raising the age to carry a handgun from 18 to 21 years of age (SB 144). iga.in.gov/legislative/2023/bills/HatchetJack

You can carry at 18 but you can’t buy a handgun until you’re 21.
I thought that had changed…. Maybe not!

1 bill for House Natural Resources is HB 1178. It reduces by 50% the hunting fees for seniors. 1 bill of interest is HB1238 which is regulation of assault weapons which was sent to Public Policy Committee. I doubt it gets a hearing.

SB335 is an attempt by the Indiana Forestry Alliance to give big to hikers and take public land away from hunters, fishermen and trappers. A group that spends nothing on conservation (hikers) versus the hook and bullet crowd. I suspect some palms are getting greased on this one. iga.in.gov/legislative/2023/bills/senate/335

The task force shall study the following: Increasing nature preserve designations for state forests, state parks, or areas within state forests or state parks to prevent timber extraction. I would assume if they designate portions of state forests nature preserves no hunting would be allowed.

Can the hunters in the state sue these people for stealing the land we helped pay for and excluding us from using it? I mean they have already caused the near extinction of the grouse in Indiana

IMO this is more of an attempt to eliminate timber harvesting on state forests (something they've tried numerous times). I checked the DNR Nature Preserve website and found the following (pasted below). Interesting that it states "do not disturb or molest the plant and animal life you find" but hunting is not listed as one of the prohibited activities and I have applied for the Big Walnut Nature Preserve archery deer hunt and the Porchland Arch Nature Preserve also has an archery hunt.
Preserve management and regulations More than any other reason, nature preserves are set aside to protect the plants, animals and natural communities which are found on them. Visitation is allowed to the extent that the features can tolerate it without deterioration.
Preserves are managed to maintain and/or restore natural ecological conditions, and as a general rule are open to the public for hiking and nature study, or by advance permission for scientific research. It is against the law to disturb or remove anything from a preserve without a special permit.
Please do not disturb or molest the plant and animal life you find: some species may very well be endangered or rare.
Prohibited activities include:
Campfires Camping Picnicking Rock climbing Littering Vehicles Grazing by domestic animals Farming Logging Mining and quarrying

I've been hunting a nature preserve for 3 years now but it's a controlled hunt and hunting wasn't allowed before.

There are several gun control bills I didn't even bother with.
