What he is saying is if Indiana had the same regs as Iowa we would blow them out of the water. Not that we are doing bad now. How many reductions zones does Iowa have currently? Why aren’t others states “blowing them out of the water”? False hope IMO!

Exactly....so maybe as was stated "the idiots driving the ship" aren't that far off course. Not saying there aren't things that shouldn't be tweaked or that regulations shouldn't be looked at and evaluated for improvement.

My thought is, why on Earth would we want to be number one? So we can get flooded with out of state hunters? High dollar leasing replacing all the permission pieces? At some point, hunters need to take some responsibility for their own herd management. By just shrugging shoulders and saying "oh well, I don't see and mature deer so I'll just keep shooting 2.5 year olds". Part of the growing pains is eating buck tags for a season or two. Just one example. Just a disclaimer, if you're happy with shooting young bucks, go right ahead! I will celebrate right along side ya and cheer you on! I have nothing against what anyone shoots. Just as long as it's legal. My point is, there are so many things that hunters can do to improve their herds on their own. It's not all the State's fault. And, just for the record, I am happy with the seasons the way they are now. If I had the choice, I wouldn't change a thing. If your DNR didn't hate you, there would be a quota on non-resident hunters like Iowa has. Iowa doesn't get flooded with NR's, because the Iowa DNR doesn't hate the resident deer hunters. Can you unpack the claim or accusation that the DNR hates us so I understand more. Your second part shows you haven't been to Iowa of late. Most of the land in the prime zones are owned up or leased up catering to tons of out of state guys - shoot the outfitting family I was with and have known for years put me on two farms nearly touching 1,000 acres total and they had over two dozen other farms of various sizes some owned and some leased and their family aren't even Iowa residents (they don't even get to hunt their Iowa owned ground every year...and are treated like NR themselves).

If Indiana moved our gun season out of the rut like Iowa, we would blow them away in terms of producing big bucks. Indiana has the potential to be the best deer hunting state, but squanders it due to idiots driving the ship. I disagree. Taking some of our firearms hunting out of rut could improve things some, but Iowa is nearly 20,000 square miles larger and has less than half the population. End result ... a lot more suitable habitat to grow quality deer, meaning more will make it to maturity. I will say this much, Iowa has TONS of open unpopulated areas but my mind was boggled by the lack of true good cover. twenty yard wide drainage runs would hold deer....CRP fields that only were half as tall as a deer is where many would be bedding....it was crazy. Most of the bedding cover I was hunting edges of or watching deer come from I'd consider very low quality cover - but two massive factors make them out there excellent: massive amounts of land and low human activity.

Once you have seen the difference in the deer here and the deer in those short gun season states...but I will take a guess that most have no idea what they are missing...

Once you have seen the difference in the deer here and the deer in those short gun season states...but I will take a guess that most have no idea what they are missing... The main prime three zones in Iowa are not special solely based on the gun season. I'd argue after being there and knowing many Iowa landowners they could move the gun season into the prime rutting time frame and it wouldn't do a ton.

Think that would matter? Also the zones. Think if they managed all of Iowa's as a whole that would matter?

Think that would matter? Also the zones. Think if they managed all of Iowa's as a whole that would matter? Could it, maybe - but the impact severity I still don't think would be that crazy out there. Large parcel ownership, and large leases don't change mindsets practiced on many of them. Yes you'd have areas that would be impacted more so by that, but having knowledge of one large operation and meeting tons of landowners while there, many of them LOVE the management style and age structure and they would not want that to change. They would LOSE a TON of conservation funding if they didn't do the zones. Certain zones demand more in drawing funds and point preferences...plus if they didn't have zones you would have an imbalance of NR hunting occurring in the prime zones and the prices there would skyrocket because unlike most years where only so many NR tags are drawn for say zone 4...you'd now have that time 10 all wanting in to that zone.

Well, it appears atleast two of the bucks I passed appear to have made it and no doubt make someone very happy this fall.
I am possibly heading back next year again….who knows.
