Notice they are limiting the amount of tags per zone...

If Indiana moved our gun season out of the rut like Iowa, we would blow them away in terms of producing big bucks. Indiana has the potential to be the best deer hunting state, but squanders it due to idiots driving the ship.

My thought is, why on Earth would we want to be number one? So we can get flooded with out of state hunters? High dollar leasing replacing all the permission pieces?
At some point, hunters need to take some responsibility for their own herd management. By just shrugging shoulders and saying "oh well, I don't see and mature deer so I'll just keep shooting 2.5 year olds". Part of the growing pains is eating buck tags for a season or two. Just one example.
Just a disclaimer, if you're happy with shooting young bucks, go right ahead! I will celebrate right along side ya and cheer you on! I have nothing against what anyone shoots. Just as long as it's legal.
My point is, there are so many things that hunters can do to improve their herds on their own. It's not all the State's fault.
And, just for the record, I am happy with the seasons the way they are now. If I had the choice, I wouldn't change a thing.

I don't want Indiana to end up like Iowa or Illinois where residents get priced out of their leases. Indiana offers a fair season structure and I'm pleased with it just the way it is. I was also happy to see Indiana raise the non-resident tag fees.

Must suck to be unhappy all the time. Grass will aways be greener someplace else.
It is super ironic that a guy hunting an urban reduction zone stacking deer like his firewood wants to reduce gun hunting for everyone else....oh yeah. He didn't shoot 1 deer with a gun. I get it. Just another guy who is not happy but not willing to change his habits to change his luck.

If your DNR didn't hate you, there would be a quota on non-resident hunters like Iowa has. Iowa doesn't get flooded with NR's, because the Iowa DNR doesn't hate the resident deer hunters.

I don't feel that the DNR hates us at all. Like I said, I'm happy the way things are.

Indiana has the potential to be the best deer hunting state, but squanders it due to idiots driving the ship. I disagree. Taking some of our firearms hunting out of rut could improve things some, but Iowa is nearly 20,000 square miles larger and has less than half the population. End result ... a lot more suitable habitat to grow quality deer, meaning more will make it to maturity.

Isn't it strip timber along drainages and crop fields? Similar to some of our counties like Rush and Shelby. I've heard in those counties once the crops come out you can hunt one of the rivers and see every buck in the area during a good rut day and just wait for a big one. I guess my point is some of the hunting quality comes from that. Beats trying to figure them out in big woods but I like trying. I'm sure the gun seasons help also.

What he is saying is if Indiana had the same regs as Iowa we would blow them out of the water. Not that we are doing bad now.
