The birds were sparse this morning. Took four shots and got three gadwall. Probably only saw about 75 ducks . Hunted until 11

75% with your shots, saw 75 birds, that’s not a bad day in my duck hunting book. Thawed out last weekend, froze up again now.

Resident geese that never migrate may still be in trouble. But ducks are gone. I’ve seen 1 water hole in the last 2 weeks that had about 8 birds. This second season normally seems to turn out this way. Had a buddy that sat on lake Maxinkuckee (a pretty big lake) and never fired a shot, saw very few.

I'm not too proud to water swat. If you can get them to land isn't that what you're trying to get them to attempt to do anyway? Hunting is hunting jump shoot, decoy them, water swat them, pass shoot them, or just get lucky it's all about having fun. Exactly. If you can decoy a bird all the way to landing in the spread, that means you’ve done everything perfectly. Fire away!!!! |

sculver I like the way you think.
A good hunter doesn't shoot at a running/flying Turkey or a running squirrel or a running deer.
Shooting at a sitting duck is almost a guaranteed kill which is what a good hunter always hopes to do when he shoots a animal.
As sculver said once you have mastered the art of decoying and calling well enough to get a wild bird to respond and land you won, go collect your winnings.

Tomorrow morning I plan to be shooting ducks on the water. No shame in my game. I like to slap em inside 20 yards if I can.

When you go through all the trouble I don't mind a pass shoot I'm there to kill something. They don't always decoy. Same with turkeys I'm not afraid to ambush an old bird that keeps thumbing his waddle at me.
