I hunted sunrise to sunset on Friday and Sunday this past weekend. Covered around 30 total miles on foot. For the life of me, I just could not locate a fall turkey.
Does anyone have any hot tips on locating? To give you a sense of the ground I covered, my exploring took me to:
- portion of Knobstone Trail near New Chapel trailhead, where I found feathers and dust bowls while scouting on 10/16 - portion of Knobstone Trail near Leota Trailhead, where I saw 4 turkey (2 groups of 2) on 9/25 - portion of Knobstone Trail near Oxley Trailhead, where I was told by hikers there were birds - northern sector of Morgan Monroe SF bordering Low Gap Road - Low Gap Trail (Morgan Monroe SF)
During all this time I saw about 8-9 deer and harvested 3 squirrels...once I got discouraged, took off the turkey choke and put small game loads in.
To be fair, conditions were terrible. Quite windy. Unseasonably warm.

Fall Turkeys don’t come easy unless you got them patterned or they come in when deer hunting. Personally I never taken one in the fall I like the spring action when they are vocal. Good luck in your quest

I know some mornings they make a bunch of racket from the roost. Yelping and clucking and even the occasional gobble this time of year. If you can go listen you should be able to hear them if they're in the area. Some weather conditions may be better like after a front. They are also pretty loud when they fly up. Ive noticed they've been flying up about 15 minutes before sunset in the deer woods I hunt. They walk up the side of a ridge and fly over to their limb. If you have a creek with an open bank they will often roost along the creek and fly down to the clear bank below. Once you locate the roost you can set up below and wait quietly in the dark for fly down or wait to intercept them in the evening when they return to fly up.

Sunday morning I thought it was April. 2 different birds gobbling and hens yelping.
