The .17 Mach 2 is too messy I prefer to stay with the .22lr, most of my shots are head shots and the 17 just obliterates the head leaving brains and blood and whatever else all over and I stick my squirrels in my backpack after I shoot one to get more. It left my pack a sticky gooey mess and I didn’t like it. The 22 usually just left a hole and pretty much a little bit of blood. I’ll stick with my 22 thanks.

I can imagine the .17 hmr was worse, never used it or the .22 magnum.

Shot distance makes huge difference of course!
17hmr has a game point bullet to expand and not frag.
In your case against a gooey mess, just put each squirrel in a plastic grocery bag prior to the game bag.

I love my 22 Marlin, a real tack driver. I have a semi auto Marlin 22. It's a great little gun. I had 1 of those for several years but never quite got the accuracy I had with a bolt action so I switch back.

I love my 22 Marlin, a real tack driver. Same here. Plain Jane Marlin bolt, wood stock, mag fed. Been my go to gun for years and years. Just fits and feels good. I love my Marlin 22mag and Sav 17hmr as well, but with ammo costs and availability, I save them for late season longer shots. That's the same thing I have, a plain and simple bolt action.

Well we went, seen some but unfortunately came home empty handed. Any suggestions on bug spray because I sprayed down with REPEL Sportsman Max with 40% Deet and by the time I got back to my vehicle I was covered with little bitty ticks from my knees to my feet and I was wearing my tall rubber boots.

Thanks for sharing that with me, I'll spray my clothing prior to putting them on.

Permethrin on clothing not on skin. This…. It’s a whole new world when I started using this. 👍🏼

My son sprayed with permethrin and went walking though the woods yesterday and was still covered from the chest down in those dang seed ticks. Hate those things, but hard to avoid them this time of year if you’re in the woods.

I think I'm going to wait for a hard frost before I get back in the woods. I've been chewed up by chiggers and turkey ticks in past years and they aren't much fun.

I haven't been squirrel hunting yet, but I have been cutting firewood every chance I get. I spray down as soon as I get off the tractor and I have never been eatin alive like this year! I don't even know what exactly is biting me, I know mosquitoes are part of it, but there are other "no see ums" as well. Also, I have noticed very little squirrel activity and I am right in a good hickory grove.
