Had an issue with a gun shop salesperson about 30 years ago. Shouldn't have been difficult to rectify the problem but he wouldn't budge. Guy I shot trap with knew the owner and suggested I speak to him... problem solved. Owner made a comment that "he couldn't pay enough to make up for negative advertising among shooters, his bread and butter, if he didn't make it right whenever possible"

So the outcome.
Picked the gun up yesterday. Is it perfect, no. Is it done and a solid mount, yes. Told me he stepped up the tap size and reamed out the base and looks like exactly what he did. Closer exam you can see that the screw does go in at an angle so he obviously followed the previous hole. Did not take the mount off to verify but I'll believe him. The mount is absolutely solid. He did say he thinks it's very solid as he tried everything that he could to move it. He mounted the mount I brought with me since I didn't like the one they put on it. As I was leaving he asked me if I wanted the base they put on. Told him I wasn't a fan of it and he said well give it here and I'll give you your money back all without me asking. Took the money out of his pocket and even got a calculator to figure the sales tax.
Wouldn't say I'm super happy with the work. It's not the way it's supposed to be. Supposed to be and will work sometimes are a long way apart. This time it's good enough for government work I suppose. I didn't raise an issue about it or take it any farther. Here's why. While he does own the shop and technically his fault, it's really not. The man went out of his way to apologize and make it as right as he could and owned the situation. He himself did the work and promised to remedy the situation if anything else arises. Would I ever have them do any more gunsmith work? Absolutely not. Would I buy a gun or supplies from him. Most definitely.
For those interested, the shop is American Arms gun shop in Bloomington.

While I certainly understand your unhappiness with the work done I can appreciate that you recognized the owner for doing all he could to make it right. As a believer in and a fan of the 870 (they are rare now) let's be glad it wasn't an expensive gun that was buggered. As you have stated the mount is functional and you have the mount you prefer so those are all good things! I have a 20 ga. 870 with mounting holes (threded from the factory) that are crooked even to the naked eye. I had always planned on having open sights on this gun but the fact that they are not right FROM THE FACTORY buggs me then I think to myself "It's an 870, it is a working gun, not a safe queen. It shoots where I aim." Does it still bug me? Yes. Does it kill turkeys? YES!
Happy hunting, hope you kill a big ol' tom with it!
