Since I have not set foot on this property for over a decade I don't have a dog in this fight but I have a very long history with this property and the surrounding area.
I killed my first duck ever in 1965 on this property and have loved this area ever since.
In 1969 I bought into the GUMZ duck club which is now the property on TOTO road, I hunted there till 1974 when I along with a handfull of good duck hunters built our own club just west of the K/Y unit along the southside of SR 8, a different club is still in existence on that property to this date.
In 1978 we moved our club to the NE corner of SR 8 and SR 39 where we remained until 2005 when we gave up the lease because of the lack of migrating birds.
When Art Gumz built his club on TOTO road his shooting hours were from sunrise till 2:30pm.
Because he controlled the property he would open and close areas of the farm based on how the birds were using those areas and because of this he had excellent daily hunting.
When the state acquired the property numerous changes occurred based on personal opinions as to how that place should be run and that began the downward spiral of that entire area.
IN MY OPINION THESE PROPOSED CHANGES CANNOT HURT the daily hunting of this property.
The biggest thing killing that area is the spillway on the YELLOW RIVER because every year tons and tons of silt are washed into the K/Y UNIT and over the decades it has filled in the marsh with silt that can't be retrieved.
When the K/Y unit was originally built it was flooded with a diesel driven pump that was located on the Kankakee levee just south of SR 8 and as each unit was flooded a gate was opened to allow water into the next unit.
A now retired longtime manager of that property told me years ago the the K/Y units are dying a slow death because it is filling itself in with silt from the spillway.
The second problem is we have lost our migration route through that area and I don't know how you can get those birds to begin using it again other than shutting down all hunting in entire area for a couple years.
The new changes are a bold move to correct the past but a lot more work and $$$ is needed and most people will not like what it takes to get the past corrected.
