I don't know what these kits are, but an old piece of plywood with a notch cut out of one end works good, or I have used a hog catcher if the dog is really aggressive. Most though if you talk to them and go slow will let you just take the trap off.

I saw (and cannot find it now) a video of a trapper releasing a bobcat from a foot hold trap with a piece of plywood as a shield with the notch cut in it. My luck is that the cat would climb over it and chew my butt up.

I believe it's meant to leverage the trap open and keep it open.

I believe it's meant to leverage the trap open and keep it open. They are for conibear traps. Large heavy duty zip tie you put thru the eyes of the spring and compress them. MN trappers and houndsmen have been butting heads over this for years. Trappers are trying to do whatever to keep from loosing their dry land conibears privileges. Im on BOTH sides, be a responsible trapper by being aware of your trapping sites, as a hound owner also be aware that trappers may be in the area and do a little scouting before turning dogs loose and getting to know your local trappers.
