Heading out for a rabbit hunt in the fresh snow tomorrow morning. Won't be able to walk as far as usual on account of my bum knee in all. But, I'm really looking forward to it! Luke and I went to Kingsbury FWA today for a couple hours. We cut several tracks, but I couldnt get anything to flush for him. Still had a great time together! There's about an acre of blackberries next door, and there's a bunch of rabbit tracks in the snow at my place, even all the way up to the front door and in front of the house.

I had never hunted over begals before so I can't compare that. But, I do absolutely enjoy tracking them in fresh snow. Putting some strawberry pancakes down my gullet, drinking some coffee and heading out soon.

We went thru some super thick areas at first and my legs are mad about it today. Then just walked some trails and kicked some thick pockets when we saw tracks but nothing. Public land is tough. We saw a group of about 10 guys starting to head out with dogs, so the pressure is high. We were planning going to a buddies place we normally go, but he is sick with covid. So when he recovers, I'll get Luke over there to try.

Every time I see a new post notification in the small game section I get a bit excited thinking it's maybe someone else that chases bunnies but it's always squirrel. Doesn't anyone hunt them anymore or keep beagles? I'm out now in the pouring rain without a gun just listening and exercising them. I still rabbit hunt, only a few times a year though because of health issues. I only had 1 beagle until a couple of months ago,now I have 2. The beagle I've had isn't that good but she loves it which makes me happy. The new beagle is real timid so I won't take her hunting until next season,I want to work with her over the summer first. I got 2 rabbits today, hit another 1 in the back end but it went into the fence row and I didn't find it. I've had at least 4 rabbits hanging around my house lately so there should still be at least 1 or 2 left. Too bad the season's going out .

As for the one that "isn't that good". Who cares. Dog is having fun, you're having fun. Nothing else matters. Kill season is going out. Running season is all year long. Run em

As for the one that "isn't that good". Who cares. Dog is having fun, you're having fun. Nothing else matters. Kill season is going out. Running season is all year long. Run em There's rarely any kids here, but she took a shine to me pretty easily,I think she'll me alright after some more time. I don't care about the other ones hunting either,I agree about us both having fun so who cares. I mainly go for her sake anyway. As for the season going out I went out with a bang in it. For the past few months sometimes when I went out to let the ducks & geese out or put them back up into the duck building there would be a rabbit sitting on the backside of the chicken wire fence I put up around part of our yard. The part right through that area is about 15 ft deep with trees and brush over to the field behind us. It's where the property liner fence row is and there use to be an orchard on our side too. But he'd be sitting there and just take a hop over,I'd say something to him and he'd take another hop and just look at me. I'm like,I wish I had my rifle. When I'd take my rifle he wouldn't be there. That went on for weeks. A few weeks ago I quit seeing him,but after awhile I noticed he was sitting about 30 yards behind the duck building in the back side of the property liner fence row. I took my rifle out and was going to shoot but realized it was inline with 1 of neighbor's sheds. When I tried coming in from the North across the yard I couldn't see him unless I walked down a path dad had made and would wind up being 5 ft from the rabbit which made him run,I can't hit a running rabbit with a rifle. Well this morning he was sitting there so I went back to the house, grabbed the 12 gauge and came in from the North again. Luckily I saw him across the fence row this time, his ears gave him away, aimed and boom. A sitting rabbit, facing away from me at only 10 yards, with a 12 gauge, has a tendency to mess them up quite a bit. But,I did finally get the little bugger. Managed to save 1 back leg and both front legs even though there's some shot in them too. A nice way to end the season I thought . I didn't think of taking a picture until I had it halfway cleaned though.
