So after I got my covid bonus from uncle peabody my next check will have around $650 extra dollars on it and was thinking about getting a cross bow. Any one have any suggestions on the basics to get for a beginner? Trying to stay close to that amount that my uncle was so kind to give to me.

Check out the Wicked Ridge line. If you want real simplicity look at the new lower cost Excaliburs. I would go to Bass Pro or Cabelas and at least shoulder different bows, if not shoot them. They all fit different and what you think you might want may not feel good or fit right. The trigger pulls are all over the place as well.
I follow CrossbowNation (lots of good info to read) and there are a TON of bows having limb and string failures right now. I would be careful and research any bow you like. Trust me when I tell you that speed kills. Higher speed bows over 350fps are the least reliable out of them all. Not saying slower bows have no problems, and not saying all faster bows do have problems. But playing the odds from what I see, you can take that statement to the bank.
I would stay away from KI and Barnett if you have other choices. Seem to be two of the most problematic common names lately. NOT bashing any name, just passing on what's coming up the most right now. Good luck.

I bought a Barnett as my first crossbow. I learned after I bought it that Barnett has great customer service...because they have to. I ended up returning it and getting something else.
If I was crossbow shopping today, the first line I would check out would be Wicked Ridge.

I traded for a Barnett years ago. Strings and scope went to crap pretty quick. Picked up a wicked ridge invader a few years ago on a great clearance deal and it has been great. Mainly for the kids to use, but I’ve killed one doe with it. Also, if looking to buy any crossbows, accessories, bolts, etc, wyvern creations is a good place to go. I’m waiting until more stock comes in to order some carbon bolts and lighted nocks, but he was quick to answer my emails late at night to let me know when stock would be back in.

I bought a "cheap 350.00$" CenterPoint Amp 415 a couple of years ago. I like it better than the Mission XB 320 that I paid double for. I updated the scope with a take-off Ravin scope I bought from Wyvern and I have about 460 bucks in it. I have not had any problems with it. I shoot Black Eagle Executioners and Slick Trick Viper Tricks broadheads. CenterPoint probably has raised the price on this model, now it is called Amp 425. Supposed to be a little faster than the 415. The trigger is not the best on this bow, but I have gotten used to it.

Little late to the party here but thought I’d share my experience .. I’m on my 2nd Barnett. I had my first for almost a year. Had a dry fire incident so I sent it back to Barnett. They restrung it, retimed the cams, and adjusted the safety. I sold it immediately and bought their Ghost 410. I was hesitant because of the prior experience and reviews on this site, but I’m on my 6th year with it and have had zero issues. I bought it for a few reasons. The first was price. I got it on sale and saved $400. Secondly, I love the kenetic energy of the bow. I shoot 22” Bloodsport witness bolts with 125 grain NAP mechanicals for a total weight of (450?). Since I bargain shop the arrows, you wouldn’t expect much. I’ve killed at least 12 dear with it. Out of that, I have only had 1 go more than 100 yards. Most drop within 30 yards of impact. I have no plans on changing this anytime soon. That said, there are newer and more advanced xbows out than when I got mine. I shot my buddies 10 Point last year and really liked that. I will be going to my local shop and try a few out (as stated above) before I decide.

I had a wicked ridge and it was good. I bought a PSE Fang around 5 years ago for around $300. It has been great. It's lighter and not as wide as the wicked ridge. I've killed a lot of deer with it
