What are you all seeing for shoulder mounts this year? A fella here in NC Indiana is asking $650. Seems high but maybe supplies are still running thin??

When I first got into deer hunting (1986),Dad took me to an archery shop in Terre Haute. There was a taxidermy shop in the basement. I asked - because I was 14 and full of confidence, how much it cost. The archery shop owner said he was one of the best and the most expensive around. $200! My, how times have changed.

I paid $425 last year. I took a fox of mine to him Saturday, and it hasn’t gone up. He does good work too. I’d recommend him to anyone.

I take mine to hoosier trapper and it’s been a couple years since I’ve been. Prices are now up to $625 for a shoulder mount.

Prices are diverse, my guy could charge a lot more before I even think of elsewhere. If I'm getting a mount I'm paying for the product quality - could I go mount a deer for $375 or $400 area, yup - but not a single one would hold a candle to my guy. I've told him for years he could charge more and he's finally over $500

I did taxidermy for a while in the 1970s out of my basement at home, and even worked for a short time in a local award winning taxidermy shop or I guess as they call it studio. I noticed and was even told by some in the industry that the more you charge people tend to think the quality is higher. That is not necessarily true, I have seen some poor quality but expensive mounts.

Seeing a guys' three-five year old mounts does it for me - many can look good for the first year, some for the first few...but once you hit five or more years how does it look.

Dale Elkins in Hudson Lake is about as good as it gets. He did my two big deer, and they have been in the living room where our wood stove is for 10yrs now. They still both look as good as new. Those were $400, I hear he is $600 now for a shoulder mount, and hope you can even get in. He has a lot on display, so any one can see his work.

That is not necessarily true, I have seen some poor quality but expensive mounts. I agree 100%. I also did some taxidermy for a dozen years. Only the cost of materials have gone up over the last 25 years. I know 20 years ago I could get the materials under $90 and now about $170. So anybody paying over $100 more today is high. You can save costs plastic vs. glass vs. cardboard choices. Also the shades of brown, white and black paints the taxidermy carries. Some pennies to a dollar adders like how much clay is used to build up feature around the eyes, skull etc. My mentor could do a deer in three 1 hour sections. He did around 300-400 per year and did it for 30 years. He did them in groups of 20.

The high prices are why I learned how to do skull mounts.

Guy I use when I don’t European mount myself charges $250. Does a great job. For me to mount has to be big cause I’m cheap.

It will have to be stupid big for me, or if junior shoots one and thinks it had to be mounted. Otherwise racks or skull mounts are plenty good enough anymore on our walls.

I only have one shoulder mount (my first buck). The 3 other bucks I have are all skull mounts. the first skull mount a buddy did for me and the last 2, I have done. For me, I'll get a shoulder mount if there is significance to that deer that makes me want to get it shoulder mounted. The one shoulder mount I have was done by Jim Phares in Westville. He did a great job. He charged $550 back in 2014. I was perfectly fine with paying that for the work he did. That being said, I know there are people out there that do great work for less. I'm trying to find someone who isn't ridiculous for duck mounts.

I paid for my 1st and then I did my next three. My 2018 I planned to shoulder mount it, but never did. Now it sits in a box in my barn. Someday it will make it to the barn wall with the others.
