I understand as well.
When I was younger and didn't have kids, I'd typically shoot a doe in archery season and then wait until the end of gun or into muzzleloader to shoot another one or two. I would throw in a buck somewhere about half of the years. The when kids came along and my parents' health issues took a good bit of my time, I harvested every deer possible because I didn't know when my next time in the woods will be. Now, the kids are at peak activity age and I don't have anywhere worth hunting within a 90 minute drive. I simply don't have the time to hunt anymore.
Fishing is by far my favorite hobby. But, I don't go unless I will have the time to clean fish later in the day. I am VERY GOOD at cleaning nice panfish and bass, I am AWFUL at cleaning smaller fish. So, if I can't go to a hole that I know that I can catch a good amount of nice fish, I don't go. I have access to a private pond that is about five minutes from the house. It has above average size bluegill and plenty of 10-14 inch bass. An ideal May Sunday for me is to get up at 5:00 a.m., walk three miles in the neighborhood, eat a good breakfast, and be on the pond bank at daylight. I limit myself to 15 bluegill and five bass per day there. I can usually have my limit and be back home by 9:00. I'll put the fish on ice and clean them later in the day. Exercise, go fishing, enjoy a nice day with the family, have a few beers, clean and eat fresh fish, and be thankful for it all.
Then back to work...
