Honestly, if it wasn't for all the shows in the hunting entertainment industry, would deer hunting be the craziness we see these days? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Marketing is a huge part of it that's for sure. We can't hunt deer a couple of weekends a year with dad's old gun, kill a small buck or a doe and be happy. No...no...no. We have to have the latest, greatest optics, guns, bows, cameras, stands, camo, calls, decoys, ATVs, etc. PLUS lease property or we aren't giving it our all. And heaven forbid that someone kills any buck under 4 1/2 years of age as that is considered a sin. But it's not just deer hunting that we do this with. When I played little league baseball, I carried a $10 glove and played in sneakers for the first couple of years. We had $6 bats that we all shared and wore a cheap T-shirt with the sponsors name on it. Nowadays, our kids (or grand kids) have bats that cost as much as our first cars did. Expensive gloves that are professional quality and uniforms that rival the major league. How many people have expensive bass boats (and expensive trucks to haul the expensive boats) and fish a few times a year? Same thing goes with bicycles. I can't tell you how many times I've seen groups of grown men and women riding $2,000 bicycles. But it's not enough to just have the bicycles. No...no...no. You have to have to have the special shoes, shorts, shirts, helmets, glasses, etc. It's like we are competing in the tour de france. If anything, when it comes to marketing we are likely the most gullible generation (or two) that this country has ever seen. And please, don't think I'm ragging on the people here and think I'm above anything I've written. I've spent a fortune over the years for "pro quality" items that I've seen in stores and magazines. Has any of it made me a "pro quality" hunter? Nope. Don't believe me? Just ask my wife.

The nicest bucks I have ever taken came from recently reclaimed Peabody coal mine ground. It was pretty hard to hunt that ground until they legalize rifles in Indiana. The old spoil bank ground is great mushroom and turkey hunting ground, but I'm getting old and can't do it it like when I was a young man. As far as value we lease 700 acres from Gray Farms and they saw dollar signs and had half of our lease clear cut. If it was big as your arm it came down. It should be great hunting in a few years if a man can get through it

Spoil banks…
A deer hunter really hasn’t lived until he has drug a deer (any deer) up and down 4 sets of spoil banks getting it out. 😳
