The most important thing is what will he think if you leave him to hunt on his own. Will he think he has to shoot something to impress you? Does he think you are abandoning him to hunt by your self? Is he relaxed enough to enjoy the hunt & harvest a deer if he gets the chance? We don't want to dump the responsibility of the decision to shoot or not shoot if they are too young. They may not like hunting if you push them to making the decision too early.

Absolutely if they show enough interest and proficiency and safety. No better way than going alone to grow up some and get some confidence.

The age of helicopter parenting I suppose.
You got your flashlight? Don't shoot me, don't shoot anyone else. Don't fall out the tree. Have fun. That's how I was released.

I remember my first hunt with my dad. My hunting obsession came later in life. It was a large piece of ground he had and had hunted for years. He gave me that almost exact speech. Biggest problem was, for me anyhow, was I hadn't ever stepped foot on this property before. We stopped at his stand and, using his flashlight, he pointed in the direction for me to go find my stand, which was about 400 yards away. "It's over the fence, up the hill, and slightly to your left. Good luck and shoot a big one". I made it to the general area but didn't find the stand right away. I just leaned up against a tree and waited for some natural light.
With that experience still fresh in my mind, I make I always walk any friend of mine to the stand I'm putting them in. Especially a friend that hadn't hunted with me before.

I started hunting when I was 14. Go over safety rules and give a cell phone and send them on their way.

My 1st time I was 12, sitting in a oak tree in a home made stand wedged in the fork of a tree, shot my best buck ever with a 20ga smooth bore Ithaca...LOL Awwwwww the good old days, even road in the open bed of a pickup without falling out. Not saying those were safe practices but they were for sure fond memories.

No video games, no phones, no complaining! We were 16 so at like 3am in Wisconsin somewhere his dad pulled over and swapped spots. My buddy and I were stoked driving in the middle of nowhere until we started hitting construction areas that required us to go from 4 lanes to 2. I think his Dad and uncle were not sleeping very much because every lane shift a face came through the slider asking if we were ok

Come on now...you know you have been in the helicopter many a time lol! Well seeings how either he's asleep in the double stand or steals my spot from me and claims as his, no helicopter here. Usually I'm trying to convince him to throw in the towel and go run dogs. He's not much a hunter anyway.

I burnt my son out on the hounds before he was 5, drug that pore little $hit around in freezing snow about 30 to many times.

My son made his first solo sit at 14. No problems. Rainy miserble day too. I let a spike walk and he ended up under Ethan's stand. I was not sure about the legalities but once they have their Hunters Ed they can go on their own except for youth hunts.

Absolutely not. Unless Xbox made a hound running game, he wants nothing to do with it. If imagine he's gone maybe 5 times

Personally, I think if you have to ask you don't think he's ready. Or possibly you think he's ready and just looking for support for your decision. Age nor activity are universal.

When I grow up we considered when someone turned 13 as a young adult. Time to start treating them as an adult. I kept that process with my sons. Time for them to grow up to be an adult.
