Today I was called to a customers place to go over what he wanted done in the next few weeks. He said he's been having a Great Blue Heron visiting and he said it probably ate all his fish in the pond. So I grabbed 2 fishing rods that he had there for his kids and I told him to follow me to the pond. First cast with a leadhead jig and a Chartreuse twister tail had a 9" Smallie grab it. I then switched rods that had a Manns -1 crankbait on it and 2nd cast I caught a fat 10" smallie. Just as I went to grab the fish with my left hand it shook it's head and the front treble got buried in my thumb next to he nail past the barb.
I dropped the rod, grabbed the fish with my right hand to stop it from flopping and immediately thought NOW what??
Long story short, the customer went back to the pole barn and got a pair of leathermans, while he was doing that I was able to get the hook out of the smalline with my left hand. After seeing how green he looked when he came back and saw my thumb with the hook in it I just grabbed the bend of the hook, counted to 3 and quickly pulled it out the way it went in.
Tonight it feels about like what your finger feels like after you had a sliver pulled out.
Thinking about it, after all these years of fishing, this is the first time I've ever had a hook in me past the barb. Been with guys that have had one in them, but this is my first.

Knock on wood...I have not had it happen. Been close too many times. Last one was a mackerel rig (big sabiki) hanging in my garage. I forgot about it and grabbed something off the shelf and hung my hand up there. Thought a snake bit me. Lucky for me the finger was big enough to push the hook prior to hook grabbed my finger.

Glad it didn't do too much damage. I haven't experienced that yet and hope I never do

Thanks guys. Today it's all red around the area about the size of a nickel but it isn't any more painful than what a splinter feels like. I will put some ichthammol on it with a band-aide and keep it dry.

I've only had one hook in me past the barb. It was in my leg but just past the barb. I was able to work it most of the way out and gave it a final tug the rest of the way. I was glad I had both hands free to work on it.

The thought makes me shutter. But given enough time and opportunity things like this are bound to happen.

Had a buddy that was fishing with me and he likes to drink and fish. He decided to change his crank bait by biting his line to remove the lure. He must of had pressure on his rod because the bait slipped out of his hand and one of the hooks went in his top lip completely through. I told him we would go to my house and get some side cuts and I would cut the barb off. Well he decided he needed another 6 pack of beer and wanted me to stop at the local watering hole so he could get it. He must of been quite a sight inside. He said he had a lot of strange looks. I cut the barb and he yank it out when we got home. He wasn't feeling any pain and I still laugh remembering him trying to drink beer with a Rattle Trap hanging from his lip.
