This summer, my wife and I have seen upwards of 4-5 cottontail rabbits in our yard. We have a few neighbors that let there yards grow into a mini jungle and I'm guessing those areas have been their "breeding grounds." Now, my wife said she saw a different looking rabbit in the yard on Thursday evening. When I got back in from work/travel last night, I saw this one near our deck. It looks to be some kind of domestic rabbit. Anybody on here that can help ID this one?

Looks like a Lion Head rabbit. That's kind of what I was thinking. But, are they commonly black and gray? Do you know much about these rabbits, scrub?

My daughter had some in 4H. Ours were white with brown patches if I remember correctly. I think they can be different colors. It could be a cross breed. The long hair on top definitely makes me think lionhead.

We would turn our 4H rabbits loose in the yard when the fair was over. It was fun watching white rabbits hop all around the yard. Eventually they would wonder off and get taken out by predators.

My neighbors let the roosters that they got by mistake loose to wander around. Most of them got turned into a pile of feathers the first night. One made it 2 nights, and one is still alive but he followed an OLD hen yard bird that learned to roost in the big White Pine tree. She's gotta be 9 years old. We seem to have a lot of predators running around here at night. Our bunny population seems to be high this year too. Woodchuck population too, but that will get worked on this coming week.

Talking with a few neighbors today, I found out that a Chin family recently moved in down the street about 3 months ago. Apparently they have their next door neighbor in quite an uproar. First the Chins cut down all the trees in their yard and they’ve simply left all the brush and logs just laying on the ground. They just mow around the piles. Then they painted all the house trim a bright purple and chartreuse green. And apparently they have been raising all kinds of rabbit breeds. John, their next door neighbor whom I know the best said he is livid. He has counted over 20 rabbits at any given time in the Chin’s yard! He’s lived here for 30 years, 2 years longer than me. He and his wife are so upset that they are contemplating selling their house. Of course I told him that is no guarantee he finds something better, let alone reasonably priced in this crazy market. I guess I lucked out because the Chin family that moved in across the street from me some 3-4 years ago have been just awesome!
As for the rabbits, well they don’t seem to be hurting anything for now so I guess I’ve got some cheap entertainment!

Wasn't it your Home Owners Association that wouldn't allow you to have a dog in a proper kennel?

Wasn't it your Home Owners Association that wouldn't allow you to have a dog in a proper kennel? No! That was actually a Marion County ordinance that was pushed through by a group called FIDO, (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outdoors). Here in Homecroft where I live, we actually don’t have an HOA!

When I lived in Montezuma there were quite a few escaped rabbits running around our block. It was right on the Wabash River. Always figured they would be an easy snack but for 3 years we lived there I don't recall 1 dead one
