Does anybody have any advice for cleaning the bore of a .44 lever action rifle?
I bought a .44/.45 Otis bore-snake and it is near impossible to pull through.
I've switched to using One-Shot bore cleaner (based on a recommendation from someone here) and have been really happy with it especially if I let it soak overnight in my bolt-action rifle. However, when I tried the same with my lever action, I almost got the snake stuck in my barrel. The only way to get it out was to spray some CLR in to lubricate the bore and even then it took way more effort than I feel comfortable with.
My only thoughts are to either: a) try another brand of bore snake (the Otis brand that I have is particularly thick over a long length; maybe others are less so?) b) switch to using only a cleaner/lubricant (like CLR) but not sure what I'd do for copper cleaning c) use a flexible carbon-fiber cleaning rod but I'm concerned with the uneven pressure since it would have to be inserted in the side ejection port (for that matter, I'm not even sure if it would have enough flexibility at all).
Any advice?

Hmm. I just found this video which suggests cleaning it from the muzzle end with the use of a bore guide to protect the crown. I've never seen a bore guide like this, but this might be the solution that I'm looking for. link

Yep, use the bore guide and a regular cleaning rod. The bore snake is only for a quick light cleaning. Think abut it for a minute. Once the fabric on the bore snake is dirty, how do you clean it?
A good cleaner is Wipe-Out and use the accelerator with it, and use the hard cleaning rod/bore guide.

If you have a Marlin it is a matter of removing the lever screw. -
Open the lever until the bolt starts to move.
- Remove the lever screw
- Remove the lever
- Remove the bolt
- the ejector will fall out
- Clean from the breech
- Reassemble in reverse order
[/ol][/ul]

Do not forget to put the ejector in. A heavy duty set of tweezers will be your friend. Hemostats and needle nose plyers work too. Just do not bugger it up. It helps to cock the hammer, but that will happen when you check for loaded condition. If it is a Winchester or Win Clone good luck. Clean from the muzzle. Henry I do not know but I think it is like a Marlin.

If you have a Marlin it is a matter of removing the lever screw. It's a Henry (I forgot to mention). Yep, Marlin's look *much* easier to disassemble. The only muzzle bore guide that I could find is from Sinclair/Dewey (actually for a .45 but their customer support said that they can make slight modification for use in a .44) but as with so many other things, it's not in stock anywhere.

Look for a small aluminum funnel that the cleaning rod will fit thru but is smaller than the bore dia. Heck, order this: www.midwayusa.com/product/1023145549?pid=306650Just use the smallest blue adapter over the cleaning rod, that should fit inside the bore, if it doesn't then you have it to use on bolt action guns and you aren't out much $$ if it doesn't work at all. AND it's in stock. The ones that you are looking for are on Amazon. Made from Delrin.

I cut the base off of a piece of .243 brass and insert it neck first into the barrel of my Rossi 44 mag. It keeps the cleaning rod pretty well centered.
I have removed the lever and bolt, but typically clean from the muzzle.

Ummm. Keep using bore snakes if you like obstructions in your barrel.
It will happen soon enough.
I wouldn’t touch one with a 10’ pole.
