I've only witnessed him do the classic 3 leg point twice and the only correlation I can come up with is that maybe he scented something versus seeing it.
Every night he he stands perfectly still with his tail at a few degrees out from 12:00, maybe 2:00ish, staring to the south.
We live in a row of houses (5) and have several thousand acres of fields and woods around us in 3 directions. Doves roost in the immediate neighbors trees and there are a couple Brittany's 3 doors down.
Is he just pointing? Does he even know what he is pointing at? Does he just remember what he saw there in the past and he could just be watching for it again?
He's gone that way once when his fence collar was low but he didn't run there and he didn't run when I went over to get him, he even dragged me back home on the leash.

He smells "something" and his DNA is kicking in whether intentionally or unintentionally.

I used to have a "pointer" it was a whoops, dad was an English Setter and mom was a German Shorthair, she would point robins in the yard but only got her to point t in the field one time. We don't have an abundance of birds in our area so basically we just did long walks through brushy areas while I carried a gun. Fun times!

In the early days of our old duck club we use to have an OUTHOUSE that had a sign above the door that read.
THIS OUT HOUSE IS FOR POINTERS AND NOT SETTERS!
