Sometimes we get back late and I just don't feel like cleaning fish. So, I bought a 45 gallon trash can and a 20-40 gallon aerator. I think this should do the trick. I had been using a 170 gallon livestock watering tank. I felt that was just too much water to keep going through. I'll let you all know how it works.

I put mine on ice, it preserves them and it firms them up so they are easier to fillet.

The more water the better. When fish breathe (also when they pee/poop) they release ammonia, which is toxic to them. That is the main reason why fish are "purged" for 2-3 days before I pick them up for hauling them to be stocked in ponds. Trout and Golden Shiners are the most susceptible, with Fathead Minnows coming in 3rd. I use an additive that helps neutralize the ammonia but between the ammonia and Carbon Dioxide that builds up in the water. I do a 50%-75% water change after 12 hours if I am hauling fish near max density.
Fish will seem like they are gasping for air near the surface even though the O2 meter shows plenty of O2 in the water. That's an indicator of ammonia and CO2 build up. Go for a few hours like that and the fish will be dead.
Agitating the water (running the water thru a spray bar) helps some, but it's not a long term fix. You can gain about 6-8 more hours is all. Colder water is better too - it slows down their metabolism.
