After 19 years of patrol work (15.5 years here and 3.5 years at a previous department) I decided to try something new. An opening became available and I put in for and was accepted in the detective bureau. It's still police work and and at the same department but, it's just in a different vein. Today I finished up my last day as a patrol sergeant.
I haven't ever worked a regular Monday thru Friday job before with a set schedule and holidays and weekends off. Granted, I'll still be on call during some weeks and weekends but, it'll be mostly bankers hours. I definitely won't miss the hip and back pain from the duty belt either.
Needless to say, my wife is thrilled. She's been wanting me to leave law enforcement and, honestly, I was ready to go. But, I still felt that I had more to do here. I did make and send out resumes. I had some interviews but, I wasn't able to land anything else. So when the detectives position came available, I just knew that was the door God was leading me through.
So, here begins my next chapter.

AND thank you for your service and keeping the world safer!

12 years in patrol and 22 years as a detective, I loved it all. I would still be doing it had I not maxed myself out. Enjoy the ride.

Congrats on the new position and also thanks for what you do. Not an easy position to be in with today’s environment.

I wish you the very best of luck! It can be really weird changing routines, but I'm sure you will rapidly adjust.

Congratulations on the new position. Thank you for doing what you do. Not an easy line of work to be in these days, but we need upright men and women to do it.

Great to hear that genesis, all the best for you. You and your wife have earned it, thank you for your service and I couldn't agree more about the current environment, I bet it is challenging to say the least. Be safe out there.

You will do well. I only asked how many because of the staffing of detectives, sometimes with multiple crimes. I was on a force of 300 sworn officers and 3rd shift only carried 2 detectives.

We have 4 detectives. Two for narcotics and two for felony cases I should have said this was in the late 80s and early 90s. A lot going on but not like today.

First congratulations! I'm sure you will be able to plan around work easier now.
I know it's not the same but I always thought if a guy could track a marginally hit deer and eventually finish the job he would make a good detective. You have to read EVERYTHING it seems in that situation. Of course the stakes are much higher in situations you'll be dealing with. Again congratulations and good luck!
