I dropped my daughter off at softball practice this evening and went to a nearby gun shop. I recently bought a 350 Legend, I have part of a box of ammo, but I was looking for some more. I am not a hoarder or even a really serious shooter, other than deer season preparation. I had never been to this particular place before, the hours are 10:00- 6:00, I pulled in at 5:40, sign said "closed". As I am backing out, the guy comes out and flags me in. I asked him about 350 Legend and he said "sure, come on in". I look and he has 145 gr. Winchester fmj,at a very high price. I politely said " sorry, I was needing something deer legal". He very impolitely said " get out the door then!" Next he starts raising Cain about how he stayed late and tried to help me out and this is the thanks he gets!!! Folks, I'm telling you, I have delt with some strange people, but this guy was something else! Of all the places I could get thrown out of,a stinky little country gun shop was one of the last places I expected. People are strange critters, I guess.

Exactly. Anyone who knows me, knows I am not a hard person to talk to and I am very respectful to others. To say I drove away feeling snake bit is an understatement.

There are those who would say give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the guy wasn't feeling well. Maybe he and his wife had gotten in to it earlier today. Maybe his business is about to go under. Or maybe he's just a grouchy, horses rear end. Regardless, I doubt I'd go back in there anytime soon.

Sounds like guy had a bad day and you just happened to be the last person he saw, so he let it go on you. Still uncalled for though. If he’s like that all the time he sure won’t be around for long.

I probably would have bought some of the FMj for his time and thanked him but we ain't poor. I can tell you I deal with torqued off or otherwise distressed people alot these days so I have a level of understanding. One thing I know for sure running a small business you dont go to work or leave it is 24/7.

Maybe he had a lot of idiot customers or something, but that's no excuse. You had a perfectly logical reason to refuse. That's pretty off the chain!

I don't think it is a matter of being "poor". But, it's the principle. The cost of ammo is absurd these days. Can I afford $75 for a box of 9mm, yes. Will I pay it, no. I understand that they're having to pay more but, I think the bigger issue is the supply and demand. They have it, we want it. Some people will pay for it. Not me.

I might of bought it but I’d been swearing when I got back in my truck I know Im buying less but I’m still buying some now and then and paying more then I should within some reason but my guns are worthless with out it. But I’m not a big shooter either so a lot of my purchases goes in the safe if I was out every weekend I’d have a different view

The ammo situation isn't good, that's for sure. The local stores seem to be charging quite a bit more than the chains, but I guess they figure if you want it, you'll pay extra for it.
I have noticed that the local BassPro seems to be getting quite a bit of 9mm, .556, .223 and some shotgun shells in. The prices are about what they were before the hoarding started up.
I talked to a guy that works there and he told me that sporting rounds should start coming in with more regularity closer to the hunting seasons.
As for .22lr, that's still coming into the store but it's getting bought up as fast as it hits the shelves.

Maybe no one came to that store except for you that day and then you didn't want what he was offering. Evidently he doesn't realize you can't please everyone with what you have on the shelves. I would never go back thats for sure. There is a couple gun shops by me I will never go back too and this was before any stupidity started. One gun shop didn't even know he was a dealer for DPMS. It showed his shop right on the DPMS website. The other shop was just a bunch of, "No you don't want that ,you want one of these" type places. Haven't been back to either one.

Maybe it wasn’t the owner just a employee who didn’t want to be there if he had the closed sign out 20 minutes early

Update: I talked to a few guys today and they all said the guy is "odd", putting it mildly. I was in Academy Sports buying batting gloves for my daughter this evening and happened to buy the exact same ammo I looked at yesterday. FOR TWENTY TWO DOLLARS LESS!

If you retail sell to people and meet them face to face, you won't be in business long if you are rude to them. If you have an employee that is like that, it's really bad for business and you are better off not having that employee, no matter what the workforce is like.
You have hours posted, the closed sign should mimic those hours, period.
You treat other people like you want to be treated. It's that simple.

When you are a small business person, many times you can't compete on price, so you better be able to beat the chains with know how and customer service.

I always try to patronize as much small business as possible, even if it doesn't mean cheaper. That being said, I will NEVER set foot in this guy's place again.

One of the things I like about selling guns where I do (Scheels) is that we simply won't mark up guns or ammo. We are by no way a "discounter" but are prices are fair and we price match. In the day of the interwebs SERVICE is all a bricks and mortar shop has to offer. Most of you guys are being much nicer than I would have been. Dealing with the public is not easy but that crap is inexcusable.
