The gf and I went by the Soil and Water Conservation District Arbor Day tree give away Saturday and picked up our allotment in white pine. We planted what we hope grows into our permanent screen between our campsite and the road.
Is there any type of fertilizer I can use to help them survive and thrive, or am I just stuck making sure they have water and hope they make it?

I would think you would need tree guards around them.

We always used triple 7 fertilizer around the trees at the nursery.

We always used triple 7 fertilizer around the trees at the nursery. These things are literally 20 feet tops from the road. I was hoping deer damage would be the least of my concern.

Deer seams to love the young ones for some reason.

11 trees. Along the road and around the pot-o-let right next to our drive/parking spot for the camper.

If you can't find triple 7, triple 12 will work. I was told to use 1# per inch of trunk dia @ DBH scattered along the drip edge of the branches.

I took a master gardening class a while back and the instructor said to just drill holes around the drip edge of the tree with a bulb drill and pour in the 12-12-12. Way cheaper than the spikes.

Transplanting those trees kind of shocks them a bit. Best thing for them now is plenty of water and some decent weather. I've planted thousands of white pines without any fertilizer and they've done just fine, some are fifty feet tall now. Have not had near as much trouble with deer damaging the pines as I have on the hardwood seedlings.

Deer seams to love the young ones for some reason. I've experienced the same. I planted about 50 of them along my gravel road for a screen and within 2 years the deer shredded and killed every last one of them. Granted, it was screening a food plot from the gravel road, so it had a lot of deer in the area

I would not fertilize the first year. Maybe a little this fall once they have an established root system. Best to under fertilize than over.
