So upon hearing Indiana had legalized airguns for deer I went out and ordered me an airforce texan 457 caliber. Have to say pretty impressive. I have several smaller pcp airguns but this was my first experience with a larger caliber.

So does an air gun of this caliber require a background check? Meaning is it classified as a firearm?

Contrary to what many people think, it's dang loud too!! BUT a moderator is legal to get for them without having to go through the waiting period.

How cool. I want one too but I think I’d better stick to building my wife and my dream house first.

How fast does the projectile move? What kind of muzzle energy does it have? Bullet weight? How much for the rig? Is there an auxiliary air tank, or a pump to go with it?
So many questions...

Will that be legal on public land?

Haven't chronographed my texan yet but it's probably pushing the 350 grain slugs I'll be shooting out of it somewhere between 900 to 1000 fps. I know the minimum legal muzzle energy is going to be 400 ft lbs. That's with a minimum 40 caliber. Any of the pcp airguns will need either a scuba tank or a compressor to fill them with air. Not sure if they will be legal for public land or not yet. The pic below is a slug next to a 177 pellet for comparison

I know some guys that cast their own bullets and they'd throw that big one back in the pot to be recast. The top right one was thrown back into the pot.

They get their lead from wheel weights, scrap yards, sailboat keels, plumbers that are re-doing a house or roofers that are re-doing a roof.
With the wheel weights, you have to melt the lead at less than 750 degrees F, that way any zinc wheel weights and steel pieces float on top to be skimmed off. You don't want to melt the zinc.
I stockpiled some scrap lead from years ago in case I wanted to start casting. I probably have around 100#.

Interesting. Looks like a gun those sand people in Star Wars would carry. the slugs remind me of Minie balls. Thanks for sharing.

Have a never ending supply of ammo friend of mine took 5 gallon buckets to the tire shops and they filled them with used tire weights.
